Which is good news/bad news for the film. On the one hand, those fans who think you need buckets of blood and gore to make a good horror movie will be pleased that producers Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell and director Fede Alvarez have gone for the gusto here.
On the other hand, there's no way a studio like TriStar will allow the film to be released with an NC-17, which drastically limits the amount of theatres the Evil Dead remake can be shown in. This will be trimmed to reach an R. No doubt about it.
In fact, director Alvarez tweeted today: Was proud of scoring a NC17 when submitted! But we had to cut stuff out to get an R and get the film into theaters.
Personally, I could give a shit. No amount of blood and gore will negate the fact that this film doesn't need to exist. It's a cash grab, and nothing more.
The new spin on Evil Dead features Mia, a young woman struggling with sobriety, who heads to a remote cabin with her brother and a group of friends, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads to danger and horror. Fede Alvarez directs the film, which is due out April 12, 2013.
