Review: The Tokoloshe

Rare is the genre film that comes from South Africa, which is what made The Tokoloshe an appealing prospect for us Basement Dwellers. What would a horror film based on an African myth be like? Would this unfamiliar creature make for a decent horror villain? The answer kinda surprised Shawn and I. The Tokoloshe isn't a balls-to-the-wall scare picture, or even a creature feature. It's more like The Babadook in the sense this monster is a metaphor for someone's mental state, not an outright beast. Which isn't to say this film is without scares. It's actually got some harrowing moments in it. They're just more subtle than in your face. And there's definitely an underlying sense of tension at play. Director Jerome Pikwane has a future ahead of him in this genre if he so chooses. The Tokoloshe tells the story of Busi, an emotionally damaged young woman who, desperate for money, takes a job in a run-down hospital. She befriends a young girl who believes she...

'Twas a great show last night on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops, but not everyone got to tune in, and some want to tune in again. Which is where the magic of the Internet comes into play... Submitted for the approval of Basement Dwellers everywhere, here's the podcast version of the latest broadcast... From The Basement! And to make it worth your while, Jason and Shawn present the full interview with filmmaker B. Harrison Smith. That's right, you only got about five to six minutes last night. But here are the more than 10 minutes Jason and Harrison talked about his upcoming film The Special, the state of the film industry, and why horror remains such an important genre. It's a gooder, as we say in Canada, eh. But that's not all, as Jason and Shawn review the upcoming South African horror film The Tokoloshe, which is about a malicious trickster who preys on children. The film hits Dec. 3. Is it worth your time and dollar? Stick with us! And stick aroun...

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood crosses 21 Bridges to be Frozen II

The Holiday Movie Season is upon us, and that means there's a bunch of big movies headed our way between now and the end of the year. But there's also some flicks floating in under the radar, and that's where Jason and Shawn and From The Basement come in. And they're coming at yah at 6:05 p.m. only on Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops! What have The Basement Boys got lined up for you this eve? Well, they're interviewing director B. Harrison Smith about his upcoming film The Special. If his name is familiar to long-time fans, it's because Harrison appeared on the show back in 2012 as writer of the horror film 6 Degrees of Hell starring Corey Feldman. The boys also have a new movie to put on the chopping block, and it's the South African genre picture The Tokoloshe, which is about a mythical creature that preys on children. The film is touted as one of the scariest of 2019. Truth? Stick with us! And don't you dare touch that dial, as Jason and Shawn bring...

Is The Tokoloshe the scariest movie of 2019?

That's how the folks at Uncork'd Entertainment are selling The Tokoloshe; that it's the scariest movie of 2019. A bold statement to be sure, but I just watched the trailer for this South Africa horror tale, and it does look pretty damn creepy. And intense. Call it intensely creepy, and we'll move on. Based on the legend of a mischievous and murderous trickster, The Tokoloshe is about Busi, a young woman with dangerously repressed emotions, who lands a job as a cleaner at a rundown hospital. When Busi discovers an abandoned young girl in the hospital, who believes she is tormented by a supernatural force, Busi must face her own demons in order to save this child from an abusive monster. Enough words, watch now: The Tokoloshe is directed by Jerome Pikwane and stars Petronella Tshuma, Kwande Nkosi and Dawid Minnaar. It hits disc and digital platforms Dec. 3. And we'll be watchin'!
