Having My Say: Whitewashing and Blackfacing

Mike S here to talk about something we touched on in this week's Extended Edition of "We Came From the Basement" with Jason: The possibility of a black Superman and a black James Bond coming to the big screen soon. It could work- more so for Superman than James Bond in my opinion. Why?

Batman V Superman gets a title

Yes, that actually does mean Batman versus Superman , but putting in a V instead of versus is far more hip, yo. I'm sure that's the marketing people's story at Warner Bros. and they are sticking to it. But the upcoming superhero mashup and Man of Steel sequel Batman V Superman has indeed been given an official title. And the words Batman and Superman and the letter V are in it.

Jason versus Chuckie Steel's The Revenge of Dr. Death

A second album review you say? Damn straight! And it's another British entry, this time from The Shadow of Death writer/director Chuckie Steel. Not surprisingly, Steel's 13-track foray into house/trance/techno/rap is horror themed, and includes audio from what I assume are a slew of fright flicks. I say assume because I recognized some of the samplings but not all. No matter, they add a layer of fun to a style of music I'm not usually a huge fan of. Fortunately, Steel's got some talent, spinning tracks that blend one into the other with mad skill. He lulled me into submission, and not in a bad way. It didn't take long before I was bobbing my head to the beat and grooving along to the music. Steel is backed up by a variety of singers/musicians including Cat, Deeflux, DJ Iron Fingaz, Mary Elliot, and, on multiple tracks, Definitial. Their talents elevate the album overall, which isn't to say Steel's solo work suffers. Not at all. But I did enjoy what ...

Jason versus Man of Steel

Normally I start spewing thoughts on a movie onto this site before the credits stop rolling, but I waited with Man of Steel . Not because I didn't dig the shit out of it -- I did -- but the flick got out after midnight and I'm old, so I went home and got some sleep. You know how it goes ;) Everyone knows the story of Superman, so there's no point regurgitating it here. This take, although true to the character's origin, makes a few changes as to how it plays out, especially if you, like Shawn and I, are most familiar with the Richard Donner version. Director Zack Snyder and producer/co-writer Christopher Nolan took the classic character and, much as Nolan did with Batman, made him grittier and easier to relate to. He's still a beacon of hope for the human race, but I didn't cringe writing that (I usually find beacon-of-hope stuff gay). Instead, I dug Superman's story and found much truth in it. This is a Superman I can relate too and root for. I...

Final Man of Steel trailer is epic

We take a brief break from our usual B-grade, creepy entertainment to share something epic. That's right, the final Man of Steel trailer before the film opens next Friday , June 14. Shawn's the big Superman nerd. I'm the Batman guy. The fact Christopher Nolan made the brilliant Dark Knight trilogy and has produced director Zack Snyder 's take on the DC Comics hero is probably why Man of Steel looks as awesome as it does. As for the Nokia angle? Pure capitalist greed. Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crow, Kevin Costner and Michael Shannon. This is one that's definitely worth venturing out of The Basement for.
