Retro Review: The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

When you think of Christmas movies, The Long Kiss Goodnight isn't the first to pop into your head. It might not be the fifth or tenth. But it should be. Hold on, you say? How can a violent action film be a Christmas movie? Shouldn't Christmas movies be confined to A Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street and crap like that? If it takes place at Christmas, it's a Christmas movie. That's why people call Die Hard the best Christmas movie ever made, which it is. Lethal Weapon, Black Christmas, Hardware; they're all Christmas movies. And so is The Long Kiss Goodnight. The Long Kiss Goodnight isn't Shane Black's most well-known work, but the screenwriter's trademark banter, black comedy and skilled action writing are all on display. This is a fun, funny, and violent action picture about a woman with amnesia who finds out she's a former spy/assassin. And damn, it works so well. Geena Davis owns the role, even if she isn...

Retro Review: The Monster Squad (1987)

When crafting a month of content targeted at the horror/Halloween crowd, it's important to provide balance between the current, more serious trend in horror, and highlight those movies which focus on how much fun the genre can be. Which is why I present to you a look back at The Monster Squad. The Monster Squad was a little-seen horror/comedy back in the day, but found its audience on home video and TV, and rightfully so. This movie is a hoot, and mixes shocks, laughs and special effects in equal measure, much like Ghostbusters had done a couple of years earlier. As written by Shane Black (who went on to write Lethal Weapon) and Fred Dekker (who directed Night of the Creeps), The Monster Squad is about a group of monster-obsessed kids who discover Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, the Mummy, the Wolfman, and a gill man have taken up residence in the neighbourhood. Naturally, the kids decide to take these creatures out before they destroy the world. What ensues is 80s s...

The Predator vs Santa Claus in a new holiday short

It wouldn't be Christmas without a little carnage now, would it? Done in the style of those old stop-motion cartoons that came on TV every Christmas? That's exactly what we've got with this new Christmas short film featuring The Predator. Only this time the sci-fi beast isn't up against Arnold Schwarzenegger or Danny Glover; he's taking on Santa Claus!

Why we think The Predator fizzled

Shane Black brought the 80s back to cinemas in high style this past weekend with The Predator, a sequel to the hit 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger flick which Black co-starred in. The film had everything we in The Basement love -- boat loads of action and explosions, gore, profanity and lots of it, and machismo to spare. Mike S and I love the hell out of the movie, as did those of us with similar sensibilities.

The Predator, A Simple Favor and White Boy Rick

The wait is over, The Basement has returned, and a new extended-cut episode is here to pleasure your ear holes! And while Shawn is down for the count, Mike S has joined Jay to not only provide wrap-around content for the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show, but to review this weekend's big new release, The Predator.

Lions, tigers and Predators . . . oh my!

The word from the higher ups at Radio NL is they like us! They really, really, like us! So that means We Came from the Basement is back on the mighty NL Morning Show today at about 8:40 a.m.! An exclamation mark just because! Shawn is away, so Jason and Howie talk a whole slew of movie and entertainment news for your ear holes, including a few thoughts on Amazon Prime's Jack Ryan series and the upcoming season of Netflix and Marvel's Daredevil.

The Predator gets a second trailer

Been at war with stomach flu and a head cold (yes, all at once) this weekend, so finally at a point where I had the energy to get up and post something. Given The Predator was granted a second trailer by the folks at 20th Century Fox, I figured I'd tackle that. The teaser for Shane Black's sequel to the 1987 action classic came out a month ago, and left a lot of people underwhelmed. I'm not sure why, or what said people expected, as it worked for me. There was action, the titular monster, and some trademark Black humour. I got what I wanted.

Here we go again bro: The Predator is coming

A couple of years ago we reported screenwriter/director Shane Black was tapped to helm a sequel to the 1987 action classic Predator. Well, an update has arrived in a BIG way. How big? How about a teaser image promising the movie is indeed being made. Yup. Check it out:

The Nice Guys trailer is proof Black is back

That's Shane Black to you. The genius screenwriter behind such action classics as Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. And yeah, the director of Iron Man 3. The man is a master of the violent, trashy action/comedy and one liners. I'm aware the trailer hit yesterday and has already trended on Facebook. Tough. We talk about things when we want here in The Basement.

Shane Black brings back Remo Williams

Surprise! Days after Warner Bros said they were moving forward with a Mack Bolan movie,  Sony Pictures announces that Remo Williams , AKA The Destroyer, is headed back to the big screen. Like Bolan, Williams is the hero from a series of adventure novels. Oldish Basementites might remember that Fred Ward played the character in the over-the-top 80s flick Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins .

Shane Black's Predator flick a sequel, not a reboot

A quick update on a story we posted yesterday, it sounds like that Predator reboot that'll be co-written and directed by Shane Black isn't a reboot at all. It's a sequel! The talented folks at Collider caught up with Black after yesterday's announcement, and he told them he and co-writer Fred Dekker see no point in starting the franchise over. Black adds he "really gets behind inventive sequels ."

Shane Black takes on the Predator reboot

Alright, here's one reboot I can actually get behind. And it's not because I think Predator needs to be remade. No sir. It's about as perfect an action/sci-fi/horror flick as we're ever likely to see. Period. What has me excited for the new Predator is the man 20th Century Fox has tapped to co-write and direct the movie -- Shane Black .

Is Chris Hemsworth a registered Lethal Weapon?

It's been years since The Basement heard any talk of a  Lethal Weapon reboot. To be honest, we'd hoped the project was ded. D-E-D. As in dead. However, the latest rumour out of Hollywood suggests otherwise. Instead, it sounds like  Thor 's Chris Hemsworth has been offered the lead in what doesn't sound so much like a remake, but a half-assed continuation of the series.

Jason versus Iron Man 3 and G.I. Joe Retaliation

I know us Basement Dwellers are often behind the times when it comes to sharing thoughts on the Hollywood blockbusters. We do the best we can, but we're also B-movie focused, so sue us! That said, here's a few words on two of 2013's biggest movies. Iron Man 3 is way better than Iron Man 2, but not on par with the first. It is, however, a nice follow up to events in The Avengers and once again features a solid turn from Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark . But the real star is co-writer/director Shane Black . That's right, the same Shane Black who wrote the action classics Lethal Weapon , The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight and directed Downey Jr. in the brilliant Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang . He breathes some real life, and humour, into what I hope will be the last of the Iron Man films. I think Stark and Downey Jr. will be better served in The Avengers movies to come than more solo outings. This is a nice, and entertaining, way to wrap the series up. A Good. ...

Iron Man 3 fades to Black

I've had an excessively tough time sitting through Iron Man 2. I loved the first movie, dig Robert Downey Jr and think Jon Favreau is the cat's ass as a director and actor. But the second film is just, well, blah. Worse than blah. Boring! Even with Mickey Rourke. What's up with that!?! But I might have to force myself to catch the entire film now that Shane Black is in final negotiations to helm Iron Man 3. Who's Shane Black? He's considered one of the best screenwriters in the business. Black wrote the first two Lethal Weapon movies, The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Last Action Hero (we forgive you for that one, Shane). He also wrote and directed the brilliant Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, which starred Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. Oh yeah, he was also one of the soldiers in Predator. The guy who told all the jokes. This is great news. Black's scripts are edgy, funny and violent. He could breathe the right amount of life back ...
