Marcus Flor vs Alita: Battle Angel

What does a crappy group project look like in movie form? One of the answers to this question could be Alita: Battle Angel. It seemed obvious to me that some of the crew working on this movie tried quite hard to make a good one, while some did not. It's a shame to see such excellent CGI animation wasted on a pretty slap-dash writing/directing job. The animators and half the cast seem to be the only ones who took things seriously. It doesn't help someone on the production just could not let Alita have normal-sized eyes. The only thing I don't like about the CGI is how hard they tried to recreate the Anime look with the main character. Her eyes never escaped the uncanny valley, and they completely overshadow the rest of the competent CGI. What's also distracting is how inconsistent the acting is across the cast. Half of the actors are trying their best, while half were just there for a pay cheque. Christoph Waltz never stopped looking awkward while holding that prop hamme...

Marcus Flor revisits From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

I think one of the best ways to see how much you've changed is to rewatch a classic movie. I wasn't sure how From Dusk Till Dawn would play this time around, but I got somewhat surprised. From what I could remember, this movie was going to be a fun splatter-fest that I'd enjoy having splash across my screen. Sure, the first half didn't really elude to that, but I remembered it being a good lead up. What surprised me this time around is that I enjoyed the first half way more than the second. While still a bit over-the-top, the first half is an intense crime thriller that's got grit and darkness to it. George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino do a great job of making you care about these volatile and twisted brothers (Quentin being the most twisted). Seeing their dynamic, and they dynamic with Harvey Keitel's family, made me curious to see how their story would play out. Now I knew it wouldn't play out in the long run, because I already knew what was waiti...

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For lands a new trailer

My hopes haven't been very high for the sequel to Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez 's Sin City . To me, the flick is several years out of style, and although the cast is stellar, the first trailer gave me a been there, done that kinda vibe. This second trailer, however, has me more than a little jacked for A Dame to Kill For.

The Basement and From Dusk Till Con

As long-time Basementites know, our fine program spent three and a half seasons on 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops , and they were good times indeed. Earlier this season we ventured out on our own, going Internet first off of this site to much success. For that, we thank each and every one of you who stuck with us. Now a new era is about to begin as The Basement becomes part of From Dusk Till Con's online radio network . What is From Dusk Till Con? It's a website dedicated to the horror genre and related conventions, most specifically Days of the Dead, a travelling horror convention with ties to Fangoria and Bloody Disgusting .

The Month of Horror Day 9: The Faculty

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy reminds us that in high school no one can hear you scream.   Like something out of those Bruce Coville novels from back in the day, ' My Teacher Is An Alien ' or 'My Principal Glows in the Dark', ' The Faculty ' is in that vein albeit a lot more violent! The basi c premise, and it is very basic, is that aliens from another planet begin to inhabit the bodies of the staff at a Texas high school and it's up to an unlikely group of students to stop them and save the world! It really is a teenage version of ' Invasion of the Body Snatchers ' and it's a whole lot of fun. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City, Machete) with next to no over-the-top attitude that he ...

Machete Kills in this international preview

Yeah, it's in Spanish. But this slick little preview does provide a first look at Robert Rodriguez 's sequel to 2010's Machete . From the footage here, if you dug Machete, you'll likely dig Machete Kills. For sure there's gonna be over-the-top violence, black comedy and a bevy of hotties like Amber Heard , Jessica Alba , Michelle Rodriguez , and Sofia Vergara . Plus there's Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and Charlie Sheen as the President of the United States . Some scary looking mofo named Danny Trejo is in it too. Here's the preview: The U.S. government recruits Machete to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer who looks to launch a weapon into space. Machete Kills hits theatres Sept. 13. Source: JoBlo.com Related articles The 'Machete Kills' Trailer is Here! Boobs with guns in this new Machete Kills poster

It's rare when one image combines two things we enjoy so much here in The Basement -- boobs and guns! Literally, it doesn't get any cooler than this new poster from Machete Kills. The boobs and guns in question belong to Modern Family's own Sofia Vergara , who plays a character named Desdemona in the Mexploitation sequel Machete Kills . We don't really need to know much more than that. Enjoy the boobtastic image: Now that we're able to move on, Vergara is joined by Danny Trejo , Michelle Rodriguez , Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir , Amber Heard , Alexa Vega , Zoe Saldana, William Sadler, Edward James Olmos , Charlie Sheen, Elise Avellan and Electra Avellan . Machete Kills gets a release date

Finally, the world can rest easy. A year of stories and sexy pics of sexy actresses later, we know when Machete Kills will be unleashed upon the world. Sept. 13. Mark it on your calendars. I'm not being sarcastic either. Machete was hardly a masterpiece, but it was still a fun ride. And it gave five-times-one-scary-dude Danny Trejo a much-needed lead role. To have him back in the saddle is a blessing. Joining him are Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, Edward James Olmos, Cuba Gooding Jr., Demian Bechir, Amber Heard (above), Sofia Vergara, Antonio Banderas, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, William Sadler, Jessica Alba, Zoe Saldana, Marko Zaror, Michelle Rodriguez, Lady Gaga, Crystal McCahill and Elise and Electra Avellan. How's that for a cast!?! No word yet on a trailer, but you know where you'll find one when it arrives. Thanks to Arrow in the Head for the update.

Another sexy look at Alexa Vega in Machete Kills

Wasn't that long ago that we, fine purveyors of nerd porn that we are, brought you a Twitter pic of hottie Alexa Vega from the set of Machete Kills. Now, thanks to Rolling Stone, we've got a slightly more  . . . revealing one. Don't worry, this production still is still suitable for work -- unless your boss is a prude. It features more of the 24-year-old former spy kid in the role of Killjoy. Still no word on who Killjoy is or what part she plays in the madness that is sure to be Machete Kills. OK, I'll shut up and let you look at the picture. Vega is joined by Machete himself, Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba , Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, William Sadler, Edward James Olmos, Charlie Sheen, Elise Avellan and Electra Avellan. Robert Rodriguez produces and Alvaro Rodriguez directs. What's it about? The U.S. government recruits Machete to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer ...

The Month of Horror Day 26: From Dusk Till Dawn

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy offers you a two for one pussy sale. You know, I really hate to say it but this flick has not aged well and is not nearly as enjoyable as I once found it although it's entirely possible that watching it stone sober was a catastrophic choice. It starts well, it does, as the two main anti-heroes played by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, fugitives on the run, seek refuge in a Mexican bar/brothel called "The Titty Twister". What's disappointing about this film is that it seriously starts out SO good, you're completely engaged and glued to the screen by everything that is happening--Salma Hayek in her prime as a stripper makes that extremely easy, too. It's once the bar patrons are rev...

Alexa Vega is a Killjoy in Machete Kills

In what's really nothing more than an excuse to show a picture of a hot chick, we've scored (stole really) this image of Alexa Vega: Former Spy Kid from the upcoming grindhouse sequel Machete Kills.  The star uploaded the image to her Twitter stream, and she is certainly all growed up -- unlike me, for making comments like that. No word yet on who Killjoy is or how she fits into the whole crazy plot of Machete Kills.  Vega is joined in the mayhem by Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, William Sadler, Edward James Olmos, Charlie Sheen, Elise Avellan and Electra Avellan. The whole thing comes from producer Robert Rodriguez of course. Machete Kills follows ex-federale Machete (Trejo), as he's recruited by the U.S. government to stop a terrorist named Mendez the Madman, who happens to be Mexico’s leading cartel dealer. The flick is due out next year.

Micro Review: Predators

Finally, after two decades of suckypairings with Fox's other alien franchise, we get a real sequel to John McTiernan's 1987 action classic. And it's a doozy too as producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal return the title monster to its roots, creating tension and mystery about the beasts while crafting a kick-ass tribute to the original. The film employees music and visual cues from Predator, adding a sense of nostalgia to the proceedings. Antal is also willing to shoot the film "old school," using cinematic techniques and effects which make the movie feel like it could have been made 20 years ago. Predators is a B-movie that knows its job and does it well, executing its simple premise with flare. A Good review from The Basement.
