SYFY celebrates Friday the 13th with a Friday the 13th marathon

Let's face it, tomorrow is Friday the 13th; and no self-respecting movie fan is going to make it through the day without watching at least one Friday the 13th movie. Well, the folks at SYFY are encouraging you to enjoy more than one as they broadcast a 24-hour Friday the 13th marathon! The marathon starts at midnight, and presents Paramount Pictures eight films in order as a way to celebrate the original flick's 40th anniversary. So you get Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part II, Friday the 13th Part III, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. At 6 p.m. SYFY transforms into Camp Crystal Lake's Public Access Channel, featuring quirky in-world commercials, camp counsellor "recruitment videos," PSAs, favourite movie moments and more. This sounds like a lot of fun, and a great way to celeb...

Witness a bad ass Blake Lively in The Rhythm Section

I have a thing for Blake Lively. Ever since I saw her in The Town some 10 years ago, I believe she has that rare mix of talent and beauty the best women in Hollywood have. And she hasn't disappointed since. And she's married to Ryan Reynolds, who has been accused of looking like me on more than one occasion. Lively is about to make the leap from rom-com star to action hero with the upcoming The Rhythm Section, which sees her in full assassin mode as she takes revenge on the terrorists who killed her family. We've heard and seen this story before, but Lively brings a conviction to the role, as is apparent in this trailer. Observe: Looks good! And she's got Jude Law to back her up. I think the wife and I will be checking this out when it hits theatres Jan. 31, 2020. Source: Paramount Pictures

Alligators-in-a-hurricane movie Crawl lands a killer trailer

Alexandre Aja exploded onto the horror scene 16 years ago with the brilliant French flick High Tension. He then went on to make the gruesome The Hills Have Eyes and the wickedly funny (and gory) Piranha 3D. Well, the man is back with Crawl, a high-concept thriller about a father and daughter trapped in a house with some hungry alligators... during a hurricane! And you know what? It looks pretty damn awesome!

Has Star Trek 4 been shelved?

Bad news for our resident Trekkers Shawn and Mike S as word hit the Interwebs today that the next instalment in Star Trek's big-screen franchise might not happen after all. Word came via the folks at Collider that contract negotiations for Chris Pine, who plays James T. Kirk, and Chris Hemsworth, who was to return in the untitled fourth film as Kirk's back-from-the-dead dad, have stalled.

Nazi zombies attack in Overlord trailer

For some reason, the whole idea of Nazi zombies just doesn't get old. It was used to great -- and some times comedic -- effect in two Dead Snow movies. And now J.J. Abrams is bringing the scares and gore in the upcoming period horror flick Overlord. Overlord, for the record, was the code name for the D-Day invasion of Normandy by Allied troops in World War 2. Just so you get the reference here.

Is Friday the 13th returning to the third dimension?

That's the latest rumour circling the newest edition to the Friday the 13th film franchise . Yup, there's a chance we'll be getting another Friday the 13th in 3D. Be still my beating heart.

No more Paranormal Activity until 2016

Just a quick bit of movie news this eve, as word broke out of Hollywood that might shock absolutely nobody and actually make some folks cheer. Not me, as I'm indifferent. But some. Paranormal Activity 5 has been delayed until 2016. That is all.

Arnold is looking . . . old in this latest Terminator image

The second day of filming just wrapped on the new Terminator movie , which means another pic from the set. Don't worry, we're not going to hit you with new pics every day . . . unless we feel like it that is. Although excited about the prospect of a new Terminator movie starring  Arnold Schwarzenegger , it must be said the former governator is starting to show his age.

V/H/S director might helm next Friday the 13th

Those rumours that the new Friday the 13th movie could go the found footage route might be true as word has it V/H/S and The Signal co-director David Bruckner is in talks to direct the next instalment in the famed horror franchise. Bruckner wrote and directed the Amateur Night segment for V/H/S. His story involved three guys who bring a mysterious girl back to their hotel room, with terrifying results.

Mark Wahlberg front and centre in Transformers 4 poster

If you think the Autobots and Decepticons are the stars of Transformers: Age of Extinction, think again. If this new poster for Paramount's summer blockbuster is any indication, the man of the hour is Marky Mark himself, Mark Wahlberg . Oh, and some bitchin' sword/gun thingy. Check it:

Attack the Block director up for Star Trek 3?

With JJ Abrams balls deep in the new Star Wars , and Paramount Pictures keen to keep the Star Trek universe afloat, bringing in a new director is inevitable. Word has it the studio might have found its man in Attack the Block 's Joe Cornish . Attack the Block is awesome. Shawn and I really dug Cornish's tale of British ghetto kids taking on an alien invasion . It's funny, thrilling, and has something to say -- which mean Cornish is a perfect choice for a Star Trek film . No word on what the next Trek will be about or if Cornish is 100 per cent confirmed. But, with Paramount eager to get the third film rolling by next summer, we can expect more details soon! Hansel and Gretel will hunt more witches for Paramount

We pimped the shit out of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters here in The Basement, but have yet to actually see it. I know, we suck. Wait . . . no we don't! We're just a couple of busy motherfuckers! Wanna fight about it? Enough people DID see Tommy Wirkola 's action/horror flick to convince Paramount Pictures to make a second one. Actually, the film has made more than $200 million worldwide on an alleged budget of about $50 Million. Not bad. Question is will Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton return. Both are rapidly climbing the Hollywood A-list and might not have time for such silly things as hunting witches. Then again, a franchise is a franchise. And, as Shawn and I discuss this week (Thursday to be exact) more A-listers need to do B-movies. They just do. In this spin on the fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel are now bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that...

Megan Fox joins Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Guess Megan Fox and producer Michael Bay have put their Transformers differences aside, because word has reached The Basement that the uber hottie is turning in the giant robots for those heroes in the half shell. Fox , who shot to alleged stardom with the first Transformers movie, will play reporter April O'Neil in the live action/CGI hybrid Bay is making for Paramount Pictures . Battle: Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman directs. The Turtles are extraterrestrial in origin in this reboot, but still pizza-loving ninjas. No word yet on what the latest exercise in Bayhem is about. As long as Vanilla Ice keeps his distance, I'll be happy. All our questions will be answers when the flick opens May 16, 2014. G.I. Joe: Retaliation delayed nine months for 3D

In what has to be one of the dumbest fucking things Hollywood has ever done, the G.I. Joe sequel has been yanked from its June 29 release date and pushed all the way back to March 2013 so Paramount can convert the picture to 3D. That's right, they spent months pumping June 29 only to yank the film from the schedule one month out so they can charge us three extra dollars to watch it next year. Fuck and You, Paramount. I was dying to see this movie. It stars Dwayne Johnson AND Bruce Willis plus looked to be truer in spirit to the source material. Everyone who saw a preview thought it looked badass. And it's the fourth most popular flick on the JoBlo.com network. This film would have made killer coin. But no, the Hollywood execs got greedy. Here's a quote some douche at Paramount told the guys at Deadline: We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally,” one of the studio execs just told me. “Jim Cameron did a...

Disturbia scribe on for Paranormal Activity 3

The boys over at Arrow In the Head and Bloody Disgusting report that Christopher B. Landon (Disturbia) and Michael R. Perry are on board to write the third installment in the Paranormal Activity series. Perry is credited with the script for PA2, which Shawn and I have yet to see as catching the new releases right away isn't our gig. But we're big fans of the original and I enjoyed Disturbia. As for the plot of PA3? No damn idea. Paramount Pictures is keeping story details under lock and key pending the film's release Oct. 21. I don't know if I care about a third movie. Paranormal Activity never struck me as a franchise but, if they make money, then Hollywood is going to beat the idea to death. Oren Peli, who directed the original, is back as a producer.

More Paranormal Acitivity will haunt theatres next October

Surprising no one, Paramount Pictures has announced Paranormal Activity 3 will be in theatres Oct. 21, 2011, making it the heir apparent to the Saw franchise as the seasonal horror film of choice. The film will face-off against Steven Soderbergh's thriller Contagion starring Matt Damon. It should be noted that Damon's last film, Hereafter, opened opposite Paranormal Activity 2 and got its teeth kicked in. Saw distributor Lionsgate hasn't given up on releasing a horror flick at Halloween and will release Dibbuk Box a week after PA3 opens. What the fuck is a Dibbuk Box? Paranormal Activity 2 had the highest opening weekend gross ever for a horror movie, $40.7 million, but the final total will fall short of the first film's $107 million. Still, it's performing well and above am average release for the genre. No word yet on what the plot of PA3 will be. Given that Shawn and I have yet to watch PA2, neither of us can offer advice.
