Catching up with... The Grudge (2020)

Every fibre of my being didn't want to check out this latest attempt at rebooting a worn-out franchise. But we've got a global pandemic going on, and I have time on my hands, so I figured what the hell!?! Know what? I'm glad I did, because Nicolas Pesce's continuation of The Grudge curse was far better than I expected it to be. Yes, critics slammed it... and slammed it hard. And viewers didn't really care for it either. Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I did. Then again, I'm not a pretentious film nerd. No backsies. Sure, there isn't much new here. But Pesce embodies the film with an unsettling sense of foreboding that makes up for any lack of scares, although I did jump a few times. And, like the other Grudge films, there's a series of entwined stories that relate to the curse, which started in Japan and has made its way to American soil. I liked the characters, and each story had a tragic, sombre feel I dug very much. Everyone i...

It's bath time in this The Grudge reboot clip

Just because we think it's time Hollywood needs to focus on telling new, and interesting, stories doesn't mean Hollywood is listening. A reboot of The Grudge is two weeks away, and the marketing machine is in full swing. I'm not sure if there's any demand for another Grudge movie. Although fans of the Asian original, and the 2004 remake, I know we're not excited for it here in The Basement, no matter how competently put together it looks. Below is a clip from the film, featuring the talented John Cho. All the elements that made the Sarah Michelle Geller flick decent are on display here -- and this one takes place in the same universe as that one -- but I still can't get into it. Maybe you can, so watch: This Grudge is written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, and is once again produced by Sam Raimi. Cho is joined by Andrea Riseborough and Betty Gilpin. The film hits theatres Jan. 3. Source: Sony

The Grudge trailer will keep you outta the shower

Remember when Psycho made showers scary? Well, probably not. It came out before even I was born. But no doubt you heard the impact the classic shower scene had on audiences. It's the stuff of cinematic legend. The Grudge reboot looks to make showering -- and bathrooms in general -- scary again. In fact, this trailer for director Nicolas Pesce's new flick is pretty darn effective. It re-introduces you to the backstory while setting up new characters and situations. And it's got a pretty stellar cast too. Take a boo: Yup, that's John Cho and Lin Shaye, plus indie fave Andrea Riseborough. While it might seem like a complete reboot, this film actually takes place at the same time as 2004's The Grudge starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Whether it's as scary as that movie remains to be seen. We'll find out when The Grudge creeps into theatres Jan. 3, 2020. Source: Sony
