Every fibre of my being didn't want to check out this latest attempt at rebooting a worn-out franchise. But we've got a global pandemic going on, and I have time on my hands, so I figured what the hell!?!
Know what? I'm glad I did, because Nicolas Pesce's continuation of The Grudge curse was far better than I expected it to be.
Yes, critics slammed it... and slammed it hard. And viewers didn't really care for it either. Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I did. Then again, I'm not a pretentious film nerd. No backsies.
Sure, there isn't much new here. But Pesce embodies the film with an unsettling sense of foreboding that makes up for any lack of scares, although I did jump a few times. And, like the other Grudge films, there's a series of entwined stories that relate to the curse, which started in Japan and has made its way to American soil.
I liked the characters, and each story had a tragic, sombre feel I dug very much. Everyone in this movie has been dealt harsh cards by life, and are dealing as best they can. This isn't a feel-good flick. It's sad, dark, and generally hopeless. I dug the vibe a lot. Ditto the cast, which includes the likes of Betty Gilpin, John Cho, and Andrea Riseborough. Cho and Gilpin's arc hit home the hardest.
If you're in the mood for a downer of a horror movie, and want to revisit The Grudge universe with a new story, give this one a watch. It's actually a Good.
