We've heard nothing about the upcoming action/thriller In the Blood until today, when The Basement learned MMA star and hottie Gina Carano would be joined by a couple of bad asses like Machete and the bad guy from Avatar. Carano stars as a wife who's husband disappears while the couple are vacationing in the Caribbean. Believing he's been kidnapped, she passionately pursues the men responsible. Stpehen Lang plays Carano's hard-nosed father, who raised her with a particular set of skills, skills that make her a nightmare for bad people everywhere. Danny Trejo will play one of said bad people. John Stockwell directs the film, which begins shooting in November with a release some time in 2013. This sounds like a direct-to-DVD feature, but Carano's presence has me interested. She was the best part of Haywire, and has all the chops she needs to be the next big action heroine. Lang and Trejo are sufficiently bad ass, but our eyes are on Carano.

As good as parts of Haywire are, the whole just isn't as satisfying as I'd hoped. And that's a shame too as director Steven Soderbergh brings his trademark visual style and retro vibe to what could have been a solid action flick. And he cast MMA babe and all around badass chick Gina Carano. Unfortunately, aside from a few signature bone-breaking moves and looking really, really good, Carano is given very little to do here. Nor is Soderbergh's awesome supporting cast. Bill Paxton? Fuck yeah! Michael Douglas? Still a class act. There's some good fights, but the action never escalates, nor do we fear for our lovely leading lady's safety. There's no doubt she'll pull through, and the film ends more with a thud than a bang. I can't wait to see Carano in another action movie, one worthy of her talents. The Expendables 3 maybe? That said, Haywire gets a Bad.

The new action movie starring MMA star Gina Carano doesn't hit theatres until next week, but we've scored the first five minutes of the Steven Soderbergh action flick. And shit like this makes me smile in a big way. I dig action movies. And I dig it when a female can kick ass in a convincing way. Given Carano's street cred and what's on display here, I'm pretty sure she's got a long career ahead of her as an action star. This is also a great way to open a movie. Some mystery. Some promise of things to come. And some ass kicking. All from an Oscar winning director. Sign me up! Haywire co-stars Michael Douglas, Antonio Bandaras, Bill Paxton, Ewan McGregor, and Michael Fassbender. It hits theatres Jan. 20 Anyway, enough chit chat. Now let Carano pleasure your eye holes.

Then the trailer for Haywire was made just for you. And it caters to those of us who have no issue watching a beautiful woman smash someone's face in, especially when said woman is MMA and Gladiator star Gina Carano. Sure, on the surface this looks like The Bourne Identity with a chick instead of Matt Damon. But the action looks badass and the supporting cast includes, in addition to Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum and Bill Fucking Paxton. Oh, and acclaimed director Stephen Soderbergh directed. That brings some class to what otherwise would have been a director-to-DVD feature. There might also be concerns about Carano's acting chops but really, who cares? Look at her. And look at her kick ass. The film hits theatres in January. I'm pretty sure I will see it one day.
