Into the MCU: "Iron Man" (2008)

If there was one superhero movie that fans will say revolutionized the genre, it'd be 2008's " Iron Man "- the movie that gave birth to the idea of a shared universe for multiple comic franchises... The MCU itself. Billionaire Tony Stark is young, cocky, and arrogant- earning billions off the weapons he designs.  But a chilling encounter with a terrorist group being supplied with weapons his company makes leads him to become more than he was... to become... "Iron Man"... This is a great origin story- not just for Iron Man, but for the MCU.  It's in keeping with the style you'd find in comics throughout the ages, while being fresh and invigorating.  A nice solid cornerstone on which to build the juggernaut that would become the MCU. I really enjoyed the characters.  Tony, Happy, Pepper, Rhodey are engaging and entertaining.  They have the comic book style of humor, while also containing depth and complexity.  Unfortunately, the villain- in th...

Review: Avengers: Endgame

Twenty one movies, more than a decade of cinematic history, and dozens of characters and story arcs. And it all comes down to one movie. How is this possible? How could something so massive actually pay off in a satisfying way? Clearly Anthony and Joe Russo asked themselves this question when they took on the films Infinity War and Endgame. Then they probably uttered "fuck it" and went ahead and made them. And I'm glad they did.

The Avengers go one more round in latest Endgame trailer

We're a few short weeks away from The Avengers: Endgame hitting theatres, and the marketing for what will be one of the year's biggest movies is in full swing. Hence this Special Look trailer, which is really just another trailer, and probably the last before the film comes out. Remember when movies got one, maybe two, trailers prior to release? Yeah, I'm old...

Micro Review: Avengers: Infinity War

I don't know what impressed me more about Avengers: Infinity War -- the fact I have to rethink my Top 10 Favourite Movies of All Time list, or Scarlet Witch's cleavage. A statement both bold and crass, but true.

It's a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man

I cared less about another cinematic incarnation of 'ole Web Head until the final few seconds of the latest trailer for Captain America: Civil War. Then I was like, all giddy and stuff. 'Cause that little kid who grew up on Spider-Man realized there's a good chance the character will finally be done right now that he's back in the hands of Mighty Marvel. Oh yeah, by the way, there's a new trailer for Captain America: Civil War out. Wanna see it? Course you do.

The Captain America: Civil War trailer is here

Like fanboys needed to know anything else other than the official trailer for the much anticipated Captain American: Civil War has finally appeared online. That, as Stan Lee would say, is 'nuff said. But we have to say something more, don't we? How about it comes out in May? It does. There. Now go watch it.

Marvel's Civil War storyline headed to the big screen

Yeah, I know. Variety broke this yesterday and everyone and their dog has commented. But everyone and their dog isn't The Basement. So here we go. Word has it Robert Downey Jr. will appear in Captain American 3, not as a fellow Avenger but as the villain -- in a sense -- as the Superhero Registration Act makes its way into the Marvel cinematic universe.

Jason versus Iron Man 3 and G.I. Joe Retaliation

I know us Basement Dwellers are often behind the times when it comes to sharing thoughts on the Hollywood blockbusters. We do the best we can, but we're also B-movie focused, so sue us! That said, here's a few words on two of 2013's biggest movies. Iron Man 3 is way better than Iron Man 2, but not on par with the first. It is, however, a nice follow up to events in The Avengers and once again features a solid turn from Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark . But the real star is co-writer/director Shane Black . That's right, the same Shane Black who wrote the action classics Lethal Weapon , The Last Boy Scout and The Long Kiss Goodnight and directed Downey Jr. in the brilliant Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang . He breathes some real life, and humour, into what I hope will be the last of the Iron Man films. I think Stark and Downey Jr. will be better served in The Avengers movies to come than more solo outings. This is a nice, and entertaining, way to wrap the series up. A Good. ...

Shawn VS Iron Man 3

I walked into this movie with some expectations; two Iron Man movies, plus an Avengers movie, in the bank . . . Of course I dug them. As superheroish movies go, Iron Man has become my favourite. For now. Waiting for Man of Steel though. As always, this was a high priced "hooker" that knew her job and completed it with complete satisfaction at the end. There really is only one gripe: Tony Stark is a hero in the suit. He is just a man without it. Let's remember that for next time. Movie = Good. The Avengers trailer!

Yeah, yeah. We're the anti-Hollywood guys. But how can we not be excited for Marvel and Paramount's adaptation of The Avengers? For one, it brings all of the comic company and studio's super hero big guns together in one film. And it's got a dream cast of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner, just to name a few. And it's directed by geek fave Joss Whedon! Bah! Enough chit-chat. Because we can, and we should, here's the trailer for The Avengers!

Iron Man 3 fades to Black

I've had an excessively tough time sitting through Iron Man 2. I loved the first movie, dig Robert Downey Jr and think Jon Favreau is the cat's ass as a director and actor. But the second film is just, well, blah. Worse than blah. Boring! Even with Mickey Rourke. What's up with that!?! But I might have to force myself to catch the entire film now that Shane Black is in final negotiations to helm Iron Man 3. Who's Shane Black? He's considered one of the best screenwriters in the business. Black wrote the first two Lethal Weapon movies, The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Last Action Hero (we forgive you for that one, Shane). He also wrote and directed the brilliant Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, which starred Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. Oh yeah, he was also one of the soldiers in Predator. The guy who told all the jokes. This is great news. Black's scripts are edgy, funny and violent. He could breathe the right amount of life back ...
