The MONTH of HORROR - Day 18: Frankenstein (1931)

Off the top, let's get a few facts straight because there are some common misconceptions regarding this classic of the horror genre: There are no characters here named "Victor", There is no "Igor, the hunchback lab assistant's name is "Fritz", and "Frankenstein" is the surname of the main character, and not of the monster. Basically, if anyone ever says they're going as Frankenstein for Halloween, they really ought to be dressing up as a mad scientist.

Jason versus The Funhouse

The Funhouse is one of those notorious horror movies I grew up with but never watched, mostly because there was no way I could convince my parents to let me see a Friday the 13th movie when I was nine, never mind something by the guy who made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre . So when the flick turned up on my VOD queue, I thought I'd give it a try. How does this 33-year-old slasher movie rate? Stick with me! Four teenage friends spend the night in a carnival funhouse and are stalked by a deformed man in a Frankenstein mask.

CGI-heavy I, Frankenstein trailer debuts

Frankenstein is the mack these days. Frankenstein's Army. The Frankenstein Theory . Now I, Frankenstein . I hope Mary Shelley 's ancestors are rolling in the dough. I don't know what to make of the below preview for the upcoming I, Frankenstein. I dig Aaron Eckhart and think Yvonne Strahovski puts the hot in hot, but this comes across as the bastard son of Underworld and Van Helsing . Granted, it's from the makers of Underworld, but still . . . Judge for yourselves. I dig revisionist stuff, and love me some action and monsters, but this preview does nothing for me. Actually, it almost put me to sleep. We'll know for sure if I, Frankenstein sucks or not come Jan. 24, 2014. Jason versus Frankenstein's Army

It's not very often that a movie comes along and totally rings my bell, but Frankenstein's Army is one of them. Wanna know why? Read on, constant reader! Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr. Victor Frankenstein. I have but one complaint with this movie, and that's that it's yet another entry in the found-footage genre. But it has a traditional score etc. Why? What's the point? The film would have been better served as a straight-up narrative, in my opinion. End of short rant. Everything else about this flick is bad to the ass. In fact, there's an entire sequence where I was glued to the screen, my jaw wide open, shocked and awed at what I was watching. This is an old-school monster movie, with multiple monsters the likes of which I've only seen in nightmares. And they do terrible things to people over...

Jason versus The Monster Squad

Yeah, I've been reviewing a lot of flicks from my youth lately. The Last Starfighter, The Black Hole, and now The Monster Squad. Being one who over thinks things, I wonder if I'm having a belated mid-life crisis. Or maybe I just feel like watching some old movies? Stick with me! Dracula is alive. In fact, he plans to rule the world and that is why he seeks the help of other legendary monsters. However, a bunch of kids regarded by their peers as losers uncover the devious plan and prepare for a counter strike.  The Monster Squad pretty much bombed when it came out, but it's well regarded among genre buffs as a classic of the 80s. This is when kids' movies had mild profanity, bloody violence, showed a girl in her bra and panties, and even mentioned whether or not she's a virgin. And yes, parents were OK with this. Oh, how I miss those days. Nostalgia aside, The Monster Squad doesn't hold up as well as Starfighter and Black Hole. It's still a decen...

Jason and Shawn versus The Collection and The Frankenstein Theory

The Collection Shawn: Talk about GORNOPOLIS! Ha ha . Just when I think I needed it the most. Sure, The Collector , (prequel), isn't even worth the memory of my watch, but don't let that stop you from seeing this. This was put together well. Like the Saw movies , it had satisfying gore. Dug it. Everything looked good, semi real, and just seemed to hit me at the right time. It scored there, then it produced an ending, satisfying my every movie watching need. At the time. Good. Jason: What shocks me most about The Collection is how such a good sequel can be born from what was, ultimately, just an OK first film. The Collection is one of the most bad to the ass horror sequels I've seen in a long, long time. I'm beginning to think that the best horror films are no longer than 80 minutes. This is a tight, exciting and, at times, cringe-inducing flick. I dig that shit. But what's most awesome about Marcus Dunstan 's sequel is the ending. Finally, we g...

The Collection, The Frankenstein Theory and an interview with Andrew Weiner

Never underestimate the power of social media. Doesn't mean you have to like it, let alone understand it, but don't underestimate it. A chance encounter on Twitter led to tonight's feature interview with Andrew Weiner, director of The Frankenstein Theory , which also happens to be one of two movies on the chopping block tonight. Shawn sat down with Andrew for about 45 minutes, and it's a conversation for the ages, according to the Bad Man himself. However, being a 60-minute radio show/podcast, you only get to hear about 18 minutes of the interview. The Basement Boys will post the talk in its entirety at a later date. Stick with us! As for the movies, first up is the horror sequel The Collection. A man who escaped from the vicious grips of the serial killer known as The Collector is blackmailed into rescuing an innocent girl from the killer's booby-trapped warehouse. The first film, The Collector, was so so. Only time, and Jason and Shawn, will tell if this...

The Basement and The Frankenstein Theory

We've made an adjustment to our next episode in The Basement, one that's got us pretty excited and should appeal to fans as well. If you listened to last week's show, now available to your right as a podcast, Shawn and I planned to interview Dan Johansson, a musician whose work we've regularly featured on the show, next week and review the movies The Collection and The Frankenstein Theory . Alas, due to technical issues the interview could not be completed in time. We pledge to have Dan on the program soon. But, and this is a heavy but, we are proud to bring you an exclusive interview with Andrew Weiner the director and co-writer of The Frankenstein Theory, which we're reviewing on the upcoming program! How'd this happen? I often tweet along to movies we review on the show, and Andrew happened to catch my tweets and strike up a conversation. Next thing we knew, Shawn was interviewing Andrew via phone from New York . We're excited to review The Fra...
