Retro Review: Congo (1995)

I didn't appreciate Congo when it first came out, finding it a weak attempt to cash in on Michael Crichton's success with Jurassic Park. But a friend recently caught up with the movie, and suggested I give it another try, saying it held up quite well. So I bit the bullet and did, and my friend is more or less right. Congo does hold up well, and certainly plays better on the small screen then it did on the big back in 1995. It's still nothing more than B-movie fodder, but it's fun on that level. You have to be in the mood for scenery chewing acting, killer monkeys and a talking ape but, if you are, you'll be entertained. Part of the enjoyment comes from seeing so many veteran character actors in their prime. Ernie Hudson, Tim Curry, Joe Don Baker and Joe Pantoliano ham it up with the best of them, and are clearly having a blast. This was Laura Linney's first crack at stardom, and she gives it her all as an action hero. And yes, Bruce Campbell has a small ...

Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer heads our way this week

Just hours ago I commented how we now have teasers for trailers. Now I write an article teasing a trailer that's going to tease a movie later this week. Or something like that. I don't know. I just work here... But a trailer for the new Ghostbusters movie is scheduled to drop some time this week, likely later rather than sooner. Oh, and the movie has a title now, and it's Ghostbusters: Afterlife. We know very little about the plot, but the new Ghostbusters does deal with a family that moves back home to a small town. While there, they begin to learn more about who they are, and the town's secrets. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace star. And yes, the original -- and surviving -- Ghostbusters Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson return. So we'll keep an eye out for the trailer, and bring it forth for you when it arrives. I...

Jason Reitman teases new Ghostbusters movie

It seems like human sacrifices, dogs and cats living together, and other mass hysteria have occurred, as a new Ghostbusters movie -- one that ignores the 2016 remake -- is headed our way in 2020! What do we know about the picture? Not much, other then Jason Reitman (son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman) will direct from a script he co-wrote with Gil Kenan. Reitman stated this is a continuation of the 1984 film.

The Halloween Spooktacular V

Last Halloween, Jason and Shawn played the cruelest of tricks on Basementites everywhere . . . they quit! Fortunately, they suck at quitting, and the Basement Boys are back for their annual Halloween Spooktacular! And Halloween just isn't Halloween without The Basement's No. 1 Scream Queen -- Brooke Lewis! That's right guys and ghouls, Brooke is back to help Jason, Shawn and new co-host Amy Wickenheiser entertain your asses.

Jason versus Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone

The latest in my seemingly never-ending quest to revisit the movies of my youth. Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone was part of the 3D craze of the early 80s, and fit right in with wannabe epics like Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn , Jaws 3 and other garbage. And by garbage, I mean awesome . . . back in the day. Does this Peter Strauss , Molly Ringwald and Ernie Hudson vehicle still rate? Stick with me! Three hot chicks make an emergency landing on a planet plagued with a fatal disease, but are captured by dictator Overdog. Adventurer Wolff goes there to rescue them and meets Niki, the only Earthling left from a medical expedition. Combining their talents, they try to rescue the women. Spacehunter is preoccupied with hot chicks, which is fine by me. But, looking back, this is a pretty sexist flick. Why are the three hot chicks so important? How did a band of amazonian hot chicks end up on the planet? How come Molly Ringwald is hotter than I remembe...

Halloween Spooktacular 5: the Ernie Hudson interview with guest Brooke Lewis

There are many Halloween traditions . . . never take candy from a stranger, don't blow out a jack-o'-lantern before midnight, and The Basement's Halloween Spooktacular. And this Halloween Spooktacular is the mother of all Halloween Spooktaculars. Joining Jason and Shawn for the entire hour is none other than award winning scream queen Brooke Lewis! Brooke and the Basement Boys discuss all things horror, including the creepiest movie music/sounds that accompany the genre. Then, nothing says Halloween like ghosts. And nothing says ghosts like Ghostbusters. Which is why Jason and Shawn are proud to feature an exclusive interview with Ghostbuster Winston Zeddemore himself -- Ernie Hudson . Hudson talks about his classic role, working with Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd , and the possibility of a third Ghostbusters movie. But that's not all! The man chats his career, his friendship with the late Brandon Lee , and the state of the film industry. THIS is the one movie...

The Basement returns Oct. 18

There was a time when the likelihood of a fifth season of our show wasn't in the cards. For personal and professional reasons. But Shawn and I are proud to announce Season Five's premieres Friday, Oct. 18, with a new episode every two weeks after that. And you'll find them all right here at wecamefromthebasement.com ! Yes , this season is more podcast based. But the fine folks at 92.5FM CFBX Kamloops will broadcast episodes as we send them their way and use classic casts to fill the gaps in programming. So you'll still be able to find us at www.thex.ca ! Each episode features two B-movie reviews, a sampling of indie music , the latest movie news and feature interviews and segments. We know we've got a winning formula, so we're not going to mix it up too much. But we've still got a surprise or two up our sleeves. And tune in Thursday, Oct. 31 -- Halloween bitches -- for our annual Halloween Spooktacular . We're joined by award-winning scream ...
