Shhhh! A Quiet Place Part II has a trailer...

Just surfaced from my New Year's Eve hangover, and realized the first trailer for A Quiet Place Part II has arrived. The first film is a bonafide modern classic. Such a good, intense horror picture made with talent and class. Given everyone involved in the first movie -- including director John Krasinski -- is back, I have high hopes for this one. That and I heart Emily Blunt. A lot! Here's the preview: A Quiet Place Part II opens everywhere March 20. Source: Paramount Pictures

Animated Addict: Gnomeo & Juliet (2011)

Once in each lifetime, there comes along an adaptation of a Shakespeare play that makes the themes and story relevant again.  It makes the old fresh and new again- offering an unexpected way to look at the timeless nature of such plays, and the characters within them. And sometimes... it just provides a chance for a bad pun... Two households, both alike in dignity- in fair Verona where we lay our scene...

Movie Catch Up: Tomb Raider (2018) and A Quiet Place

Given the juggle that is family, a full-time job and this site, neither Shawn nor I get to see every movie we want to in theatres. While unfortunate, it also means we have the joy of catching up with these flicks when they hit the home market. I got to do just that this Canada Day weekend, taking in not only the new Tomb Raider, but the much acclaimed A Quiet Place. How do these flicks rate on the Basement scale? Stick with me!

Jason versus In the Heart of the Sea and Sicario

I'm still about 48 hours away from catching Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but I have had the opportunity to catch up with a couple of the fall's bigger releases. Sure, they aren't Star Wars big, but one is a critically acclaimed crime flick and the other a blockbuster wannabe about a really pissed off whale. That's right, I'm talking In the Heart of the Seas (the whale movie) and Sicario (not the whale movie), and I've sobered up long enough to toss a few thoughts down on this blog post. Just a few thoughts, so stick with me!

Jason versus Edge of Tomorrow

Fellow Basementites Matt Bellamy and Lachlan Labere already sounded off on the latest Tom Cruise sci-fi epic Edge of Tomorrow. They've talked at length about the Groundhog Day aspects of the movie and the love/hate thingy audiences have for Cruise. I'm gonna hit this movie from the only angle I know -- the gut. An officer finds himself caught in a time loop during a war with an alien race . His skills increase as he faces some brutal combat scenarios, and his union with a Special Forces warrior gets him closer and closer to defeating the enemy.

Lachlan Labere versus Edge of Tomorrow

Thank you Matt Bellamy for convincing me to get out the other night and see Edge of Tomorrow at my local theatre. Because of a terrific partnership between said theatre and my employer, I got to enjoy this latest Tom Cruise sci-fi spectacle fro $2. And in 3D no less. The price was a bonus. Because of Bellamy's review here on WCFTB, I was prepared to pay the full cost of admission. And now I can admit, I don't feel I would have felt ripped off if I had.

Matt Bellamy versus Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow deals with the idea of not exactly time travel , per say but something more along of the lines of "time repetition"; re-living the same day/event over, and over, and over again. For the sake of scientific conversation though, let's take a trip back in time to a very specific date: Monday, May 23, 2005. In my very best Neil deGrasse Tyson voice: "Come with me..."

Live, die, repeat in this Edge of Tomorrow trailer

Between Godzilla and Doug Liman 's Edge of Tomorrow, Warner Bros' is looking pretty damn good for the summer of 2014. Granted, I preferred the title All You Need Is Kill over Edge of Tomorrow, but what the deuce do I know.  Tom Cruise and the yum that is Emily Blunt star in this sci-fi tale about a soldier who finds himself in a time loop of the last day of his battle with aliens. Think Groundhog Day with guns and alien invaders, and you still won't come close to how awesome this movie looks. No disrespect to Groundhog Day. Edge of Tomorrow also stars Bill Paxton , Kick Gurry , Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley , Jonas Armstrong and Franz Drameh . The flick opens June 6. Check out Emily Blunt in this deleted scene from Looper

It's been 24 hours since I watched Looper, and I still can't get the flick out of my mind. So I guess fate was reading my mail when I stumbled across this deleted scene from Rian Johnson's sci-fi flick. There are actually 22 scenes Johnson had to leave on the editing bay floor. All of them are available on the DVD/Blu-ray, which I intend to pick up come payday. Fortunately, this one showing a confrontation between Emily Blunt and Garret Dillahunt found its way online and into The Basement. For those who haven't seen the movie yet, this doesn't give too much away. And if you haven't, Shawn and I strongly suggested you do. For those who have, it's easy to see why this was cut. But, when you have a movie full of great scenes, somethings gotta go. Shutting up now. Watch. Enjoy. Thanks to MovieclipsCOMINGSOON for the video.

Jason versus Looper

Finally! I get to end the year catching one of the movies I was most looking forward to in 2012. A sci-fi/action/drama from one of my favourite writer/directors, Rian Johnson, and starring three of my favourite actors -- Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt. So how does Looper rate? In 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by transporting back Joe's future self. But that's just the beginning of this thrilling, funny, heart-breaking and mind-bending flick. Leave it to the man who made a pulp P.I. film set in modern high school to take the tired old time-travel genre and make it fresh and interesting. And very, very exciting. Looper isn't a straight-up action flick though. It asks some uneasy questions and doesn't present us with any easy answers. How far would you go to protect your son? Wha...

Matt Bellamy reviews Looper

Read nothing, avoid spoilers, and do not watch a single clip or frame outside of the trailer -- you've been warned!  The latest from writer-director Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) is his most accessible film yet but don't let that fool you into thinking this is a lesser effort, or selling out to Hollywood, you will leave the theatre with your head swimming! The bare bones plot is that in the year 2074, time travel is available although highly illegal and is only utilized by criminal organizations. When they wish to dispose of a body, these criminals send their victims back 30 years to a specific location, at a specific time where hitmen await them to blow them away and then incinerate their bodies, effectively erasing them from time. Joseph Gordon Levitt plays Joe, one of these hitmen referred to as "loopers", he lives the high life when he isn't working, he parties hard and abuses drugs more than recreationally. When one of his target...

Latest Looper poster a work of art

Literally, it's a piece of art. No photoshop, no superimposed heads -- this is a nice, drawn/painted poster. Classy! Which is what the word is on writer/director Rian (Brick) Johnson's film. It sits at 96-per-cent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, which is no small feat. The sci-fi/action flick sounds like something special. And, with a cast that includes Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt, us movie geeks are likely in for a real treat. In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by transporting back Joe's future self. Now, check out the poster by way of the boys at JoBlo.com! Looper opens next Friday.

Latest Looper trailer offers more action, story

Regular readers know that I'm already pretty psyched to see writer/director Rian Johnson's Looper when it hits theatres this September, and my anticipation has grown another notch after viewing the latest trailer. We've got more Bruce Willis Vs. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, more of the hotness that is Emily Blunt, more of the story and, yes, more action. Bring on Sept. 28 already, bitches! For the uninitiated, Gordon-Levitt is an assassin in the present on the hunt for his future self, the one and only Bruno. If that's not enough to get you excited, go find another hobby! Happy Canada Day to all our homegrown friends and fans! We'll be back in The Basement on Tuesday!

Get your mind rocked with the Looper teaser

We've seen the teaser for the teaser. Now we've got the real deal. And all I can say is fuck yeah! This looks badass. Cool concept, cool stars and some cool-as-hell action, all wrapped up in a pretty one-minute-and-46-second package. I am impressed. For the uninitiated, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an assassin on the hunt for his future self, the one and only Bruce Willis. Looper is written and directed by Rian Johnson, who is one of my favourite filmmakers at the moment. If this is half as good as his first film, Brick, it's gonna be awesome! Looper appears in theatres September 28. But you can watch the teaser right now!

Another Inception star could join The Dark Knight Rises

My hands down favourite working actor is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He was brilliant in Brick, the best part of Killshot and The Lookout, and got a much deserved bit of public exposure as Arthur in Inception. Now Deadline has it that Gordon-Levitt could be re-teaming with writer/director Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight Rises. No word yet on who he will play or how large the part. Knowing Nolan, it will be something interesting. In addition to the returning cast of Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman, Nolan has added two stars to his final Batman film: Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Gordon-Levitt's Inception co-star Tom Hardy as villain Bane. That's a great cast and up them to anyone who thinks otherwise. Gordon-Levitt is currently finishing work on the sci-fi thriller Looper with Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt.

Micro Review: The Wolfman

What starts off as a beautifully mounted remake of the Universal monster classic quickly de-evolves into just another Hollywood horror movie, lack of actual scares included. There is a wild and crazy fun side to this movie and a serious, dull, lifeless side as well. The two halves duke it out for much of the too-long running time before the film limps to an uninspired conclusion. In fact, the whole problem with the film is that it doesn't know whether it wants to be old-fashioned or cutting edge. I'd have preferred old-fashioned. A Bad review from The Basement for me.
