Exit 727, Skinwalker Ranch and The Art of the Steal interview

Talk to a Basementite born in the 70s and 80s, or any movie geek worth his or her salt, and there's general agreement that Kurt Russell is the man. Think about it: Escape from New York , The Thing , Big Trouble in Little China , Tango and Cash and even later efforts like Breakdown and Executive Decision are either cult favourites or bonafide modern classics. So when word reached The Basement that Russell has a new movie coming out -- his first starring role since 2007's Death Proof -- Jason and Shawn took notice. And The Basement Boys are proud to present a 15-minute exclusive interview with the producer of The Art of the Steal, Nicholas Tabarrok. Nicholas talks The Art of the Steal, working with Kurt Russell and his all-star cast of co-stars, plus other genre flicks he has coming down the pike. It's a great interview, one of the best in Basement history. Plus Jason and Shawn put two films on the chopping block; the crime-thriller Exit 727 and the spooky foun...

Jason revisits Planet Terror

The Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez 70s throwback Grindhouse didn't do well at the box office. But, for those movie geeks who saw it, the three hours plus (with fake previews) trashy double bill was a rare gem. Watching Grindhouse in a theatre is still one of my Top 5 favourite movie theatre experiences. Too. Much. Crazy. Fun. Of the two flicks, I remember Rodriguez's Planet Terror being the stronger. Tarantino's Death Proof was just too yappy. How does Planet Terror hold up six years later? Stick with me. After an experimental bio-weapon is released, turning thousands into zombie-like creatures, it's up to a rag-tag group of survivors to stop the infected and those behind its release. In short, yes it does. Planet Terror is a gory good time with over-the-top violence, a stellar cast (talking about YOU Jeff Fahey , Michael Parks , Michael Biehn , Bruce Willis , Marley Shelton and Josh Brolin ) and more than a few scenes that remind us Rose McGowan is h...

Kurt Russell is in for The Art of the Steal

You all know who Kurt Russell is right? The man is a veritable Hollywood genre legend. Snake Plissken . Jack Burton . R. J. McReady. Gabriel Cash . The list goes on and on. Russell hasn't done a lot lately, with his last major role being Stuntman Mike in Death Proof. But he's back Sept. 20 with a new flick called The Art of the Steal. In this con movie about honor, revenge and the bonds of brotherhood, Crunch Calhoun (Russell), a third rate motorcycle daredevil and semi-reformed art thief, agrees to get back into the con game and pull off one final lucrative art theft with his untrustworthy brother, Nicky ( Matt Dillon ). Joining Russell and Dillon are Jay Baruchel , Terence Stamp (kneel before Zod!) and Satan's Little Helper hottie Katheryn Winnick . Observe this trailer: Granted, Jonathan Sobol's flick doesn't break any new ground, but it does look like fun. And Russell certainly brings his trademark smart assery and charm. Here's hoping t...

The Month of Horror Day 9: Death Proof

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way!And for today's edition he takes another trip to the cinematic Grindhouse. Part two of Grindhouse! This feature presentation, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, is different in just about every way from 'Planet Terror', save for the scratches and cigarette burns ... on the film stock. Before it was zombies and now it's girls--which is truly more terrifying? Okay, so the girls aren't the antagonists here (although you will want to punch them in the face on occasion for never shutting up), the big bad guy is actually Stuntman Mike, played by Kurt Russell. Who is Stuntman Mike and why is he so evil? He's the ultimate misogynist who can't stand the way women "slut" themselves up so he char...
