Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson take on Saw with Spiral

That's right, there's a new Saw movie coming our way. The ninth in the franchise to be exact. I gave up around part six, I think. Kinda lost count actually... Attempts to revive the series with Jigsaw didn't quite work in 2017. But that's never stopped Hollywood from trying, and trying again. So what makes them think another go around will work? And why should we as viewers care? Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, that's why. You read that right. Comedian Chris Rock not only stars in Spiral, but executive produces as well. And he's recruited badass motherfucker Samuel L. Jackson to co-star, and brought back franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman, who made Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV. Check it out: How this fits into the mythology remains to be seen, but I do like what I see here, despite being skeptical about yet another Saw movie. The presence of Rock, Jackson and Bousman is not without interest, as is the Se7en vibe I get from the trailer. We...

Happy New Year... From The Basement!

2019 is almost a memory, and it was a good year for our show. This is the year Shawn and I realized our long-term goal of taking things prime time, which we did in early November on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops, and there was much rejoicing. It was also a year where we interviewed some truly awesome people, including Jamie Bernadette, Darren Lynn Bousman, Trista Robinson, Jennifer N. Linch and Eric Red. We reviewed a lot of good movies, a few great ones, and a handful of duds. Such is the business. Our listenership continues to grow, and we couldn't be more thankful for that. We've been doing this a long time. When our podcast drops Saturday morning, it'll mark our 10th anniversary. That's a lifetime in Internet years, and we couldn't have done it without the support of each and every one of you. Big thanks to those we've met along the way, and remain friends and sometime collaborators to this day. We're talking about YOU John Fallon, Jon Cros...

The Darren Lynn Bousman interview, St. Agatha review, and Miss Bala

Hot off the press, straight from their segment on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show, it's Jason and Shawn's one-on-one interview with writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman! Sure, you heard about four minutes of it on the morning news, but here's all 14 minutes for your listening pleasure.

Darren Lynn Bousman interviews Miss Bala

This morning's Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show segment is a bit of a treat for movie fans, especially those who enjoyed the Saw series and like their films on the scary side. How so? Well, Jason sat down earlier this week with writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman, who rose to fame directing Saws II through IV, among several other genre offerings. His latest, St. Agatha, comes out next week, and he's here to talk about it.

Repent before Darren Lynn Bousman's St. Agatha

Darren Lynn Bousman made quite a name for himself in the horror community directing Saws II through IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera. Since then he's kept busy with several more genre offerings, and his latest hits theatres and digital in February. Rejoice! St. Agatha looks like it'll be a female-driver horror tale, one peeps are calling nunspoitation . . . which definitely peaks our interest in The Basement. What have we got here, you ask?

Sunday Night at the Movies: Tales of Halloween

'Twas the Sunday before Halloween, and all through The Basement, not a creature was stirring . . . except one allegedly creepy movie featuring 10 short stories by 11 of the most notorious directors working in indie horror at the moment. That's right, we're celebrating the final Sunday before the Best Night of the Year with the new horror anthology Tales of Halloween, a flick we pimped right before *cough cough* calling it quits last Halloween. Hey, we changed our collective mind. Wanna fight about it?

Eleven directors on board for Halloween anthology

No, not an anthology related to the popular Halloween franchise, but one set on Halloween night. Think Trick r Treat, but with more directors. And ultimately more stories. Ten stories that is. From 11 directors. All set on Halloween. Sounds like our kind of horror anthology!

Face the Jersey Devil in this trailer for The Barrens

It's been a long time since we've talked about Darren Lynn Bousman's latest horror flick The Barrens. But we decided it was high time given the film now has a release date and trailer. The awesome folks over at Anchor Bay have picked up the terror tale intent on a limited theatrical release Sept. 28 before sending it to DVD and Blu-Ray Oct. 9. All this happens just in time for Season Four of our show . . . so guess what we're reviewin'!?! The Barrens stars Stephen Moyer of True Blood fame as a man who takes his family on a camping trip into the New Jersey Pine Barrens and becomes convinced they are being stalked by the Jersey Devil. Cool! There's just not enough movies out there about the Jersey Devil. And it looks like Bousman is focusing on scares and psychological horror instead of the gore he displayed in the Saw films. Not that we have a problem with grue. Far from it. But it's just nice to see a filmmaker try something different. We forgive yo...

New Mother's Day trailer, release dates

After sitting on a shelf for more than a year, Darren Lynn Bousman's Mother's Day remake is finally coming home. We reported late last year that the film was going to hit theatres on May 13. We've now learned that Anchor Bay Films is gearing up to release it on DVD and Blu-Ray May 8 following a limited theatrical engagement in New York, L.A. and Chicago on May 4. Wow, that is pretty limited. For those who aren't in the know, Bousman's remake of the 1980 Troma shocker follows the sadistic members of a villainous family as they return to their childhood home to terrorize the new owners and their guests. Rebecca DeMornay (above) plays the titular mother and Jaime King, Deborah Ann Wolf and Briana Evigan also star. The remake is getting good buzz among horror fans, so you know we'll review it on our June Special later this year. Until then, check out the new trailer care of those fine folks at Anchor Bay and, in this case, Bloody Disgusting.

Briana Evigan joins The Devil's Carnival

Any excuse to post a pic of the lovely Briana Evigan is a good excuse in my book. And hey, it's horror-related news, so why the deuce not!?! Evigan, the hottie who starred in Burning Bright and Sorority Row, has signed on to Darren Lynn Bousman's 45-minute experimental short film The Devil's Carnival. The latest genre offering from Bousman, who helmed several of the Saw movies plus Mother's Day, The Barrens, the non-Asylum 11-11-11 and Repo: The Genetic (spits) Opera. She joins Taryn Manning and Bill Moseley in the short, which is a quasi musical about a carnival run by the devil. The musical aspect turns me right off, but with Evigan in it . . . Yeah. I might just give it a shot. And it's only 45 minutes. Right? Not much more is known about the project, but we'll try and keep you Basementites in the loop.

Anchor Bay celebrates Mother's Day

It's seems like forever since Darren Lynn Bousman wrapped production on his remake of Mother's Day in 2009. Since then the film has slowly been released all over the world but no release has been forthcoming in North America. However, those who've been looking forward to the film can rest easy now that Mother's Day has been picked up by the folks at Anchor Bay Films. For those who aren't in the know, Bousman's remake of the 1980 Troma shocker follows the sadistic members of a villainous family as they return to their childhood home to terrorize the new owners and their guests. Rebecca DeMornay plays the titular mother and Jaime King, Deborah Ann Wolf and Briana Evigan (a Basement favourite hottie) also star. The film is expected to hit theatres on May 13, which happens to be Mother's Day. We've heard good things about this, but seeing will be believing. Check out the preview below to get your own taste of the film.

The world ends on 11-11-11

There's something about religious horror that can, when done right, scare the balls right off a guy. The Exorcist did it. I'd argue Stigmata did an OK job. End of Days not so much (sorry Arnie). Time will tell if Darren Lynn Bousman's 11-11-11 works or not. The film is due out next month on Nov. 11 (duh) but this is the first real look we've had of it. I'm not sure if Rocket Releasing and Big Sky just came on board to distribute the picture or not, but at least we have something that gives us a feel for a film we first heard about year or so back. Bousman's film stars Timothy Gibbs, Michael Landes, Wendy Glenn, Lluis Soler, Ángela Rosal, Brendan Price, Salomé Jimenez, Benjamin Cook and Montse Alcoverro. As for the plot, An author travels to Barcelona to see his estranged brother and dying father, where he learns that his life is plagued by events that occur at 11th day of the 11th month of this year. The preview looks fine, but not completely inspiring. H...

Saw helmer tackles The Jersey Devil

Darren Lynn Bousman is best known for directing Saws II through IV and making Shawn angry with Repo: The Genetic Opera. But he's actually been working hard in the horror genre with the unreleased Mother's Day remake and the upcoming 11-11-11. And, just because the dude obviously likes to stay busy, he's lined up The Barrens for his next project. The film stares True Blood's Stephen Moyer as a man who takes his family on a camping trip in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, where he soon becomes convinced the legendary winged monster known as the Jersey Devil is stalking them. The Jersey Devil hasn't been well served on film, with only The Last Broadcast and The 13th Child doing the legend justice. Say what you will about the Saw movies, and I'm not a fan, but Bousman does know how to direct. Hopefully he can make the beast convincing and scary. Bousman told Variety that "I don't want to turn it into a cheesy creature feature. It's about the character...
