Review: Greyhound

Some mainstream critics have complained Greyhound is too steeped in naval-combat tactics and lacking in depth of character and story, which is funny, as that's the whole point of Tom Hanks's new World War 2 movie. This is a slice of military history; a film that attempts to capture the harsh, and often frightening, reality Allied convoys faced as they crossed the Atlantic, knowing Axis U-boats lurked beneath them and could strike at any time. Greyhound is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd, and details an inexperienced captain's first wartime mission guiding troop transports to Europe. They ended up relentlessly hunted by four U-boats, which resulted in one of the longest, largest, and most complex naval battles in history. I love military history, especially World War 2, so Greyhound is right up my alley. I don't often get caught up in tactics and lingo, but so much of Greyhound relies on just that for its authenticity, that I didn't mind this ...

Doctor Sleep is Playing with Fire Midway through Last Christmas

The wait is over, the time is now, and so it begins; From The Basement takes to prime-time radio today at 6:05 p.m., only on Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops! And what do Jason and Shawn have in store for listeners this eve? A bunch of stuff that's guaranteed to make the 22 minutes and change fly by at lightning speed. It'll be a good listen, we promise you that. For one, they review the upcoming horror flick Animal Among Us starring Christian Oliver and Larisa Oleynik, which comes out Nov. 19. Is this just another kids-go-into-the-woods-kids-get-dead campground slasher? Or do the filmmakers offer something a little different? Stick with us! Don't touch that dial, there's more! Jay has checked out some of the Apple TV Plus offerings and has a few words to say about them. Meanwhile, Shawn took in the recent Trash Wrestling event at Moccasin Square Gardens and wants more people to attend in the future. Throw in a rundown of what's worth watching on the big and small...

An evening with Apple TV Plus

I was pretty stoked for Apple TV Plus. The new streaming service had enticed the likes of Jason Momoa, Francis Lawrence, Steven Spielberg, Reese Witherspoon, M. Night Shyamalan and more. Apple is also pretty reliable when it comes to creating a good product, and at $5.99 a month, the price was right. So I sat down the other night and decided to give a couple of shows a try, starting with See, the epic new sci-fi series starring Momoa and directed by Lawrence. I dig their work, I dig science fiction, and I'm all about the epic. "Bring it on," I said. The show sucked! I'm usually more than willing to suspend my disbelief, but I couldn't accept a world where a virus had wiped out most humans, and rendered the survivors blind. Nor could I accept, even after a hundred years or so, these blind people could survive in the wild, build shacks to live in -- not to mention some nifty, medieval looking clothing -- and wage tribal warfare on each other. You read that...

Terminator: Dark Fate, Motherless Brooklyn, Arctic Cats and Harriet

It's the day after Judgment Day, as in the day after Halloween, but that doesn't mean those fine purveyors of genre entertainment are taking the day off. No sir! There's a podcast to deliver to the masses, and deliver it Jason and Shawn shall! This is the final extended cut podcast before The Basement Boys go prime time, bitch! That's right: From The Basement takes over the weekly 6 p.m. spot Friday nights on Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops starting Nov 8! So Jason and Shawn use this episode as a "dry run," making sure they don't swear, stay within the 22-minute time slot, things like that. Oh, and they explain the rules of being on the radio, as there are many. Can they abide by these guidelines, or do they crap the bed right out the gate? Stick with us! And stick around, as there's much entertainment to discuss. The boys talk the latest in the Streaming Wars between Netflix, Apple TV Plus (which hits today) and Disney +. Who will be the victor? Hard...

Arctic Cats terminate Harriet in Motherless Brooklyn

There's four new movies heading to theatres this weekend, but only one is expected to blow up at the box office, and even that is questionable. Which movie is that, you might ask? That's something Jason and Howie intend to answer when From The Basement's FINAL weekly segment on the Radio NL 610 AM Morning News hits the airwaves at 8:40 this morning. The big movie of the weekend is destined to be Terminator: Dark Fate, but even then it's looking at $35 to $45 million during the three days. That's OK, but not huge. Not the kind of huge that marked the franchise's -- or Arnold Schwarzenegger's -- heyday. But it will still fair better than the animated Arctic Cats, slavery drama Harriet and 50s detective flick Motherless Brooklyn. Joker is expected to top all three, and it's been out a month now. Not interested in any of those options? Jason and Howie have the rundown on what's worth watching on TV -- including the streaming options on Apple TV...

First look at Jason Momoa's new Apple TV + series

I refrained from making any sight jokes in the headline, as Jason Momoa's new Apple TV + series is called See, and it takes place in a future where humanity has lost the ability to do just that -- see. So yeah, I took the high road on that one. But the series, which debuts Nov. 1 along with the new streaming platform, looks pretty damn good. We're getting an epic-scale, post-apocalyptic world here, and no expense was spared. I am impressed. Check it out, and be impressed as well: The series was written and created by Steven Knight, and directed by Francis Lawrence. What do you think? Do you like what you... See? Apple TV + will cost $5.99 a month in our Home and Native Land. Source: Apple TV +
