Spurred by the recent entries in the video-game series, I decided to see how 2002's Resident Evil film holds up.
While it's decent enough, it really misses out on the game's potential. It decides not to set the story in the iconic mansion, and leans more toward action than horror. While the games aren't pure horror, the tense survival aspect is essential to the experience.
The other missing element is the maze-like mansion that was the star of the game. Its cryptic design and Victorian decor juiced the atmosphere and drew you into the story. Weirdly enough they included the mansion, but only gave it a measly scene and a half of screen time.
Resident Evil: The Movie honestly isn't that bad, it's just a shame it wasn't as fun -- and true to the game -- as it could've been. I still recommend a watch, at least to see the 2000s sheen on it in all its glory. It's pretty much a Good.
