News broke yesterday afternoon that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a fourth entry in The Matrix franchise. And, not surprisingly, Keanu Reeves will be back as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity.
Lana Wachowski, who created the series with her sister, Lily, will return as writer and director.
The first Matrix was mind blowing when it hit in early 1999 (yup, 20 years ago). The back-to-back sequels were back-to-back letdowns. Not without their moments, but nowhere near the quality of the first film.
I'm not sure if its my age, my lack of enthusiasm for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, or some combination of the two, but I can't get excited for more Matrix movies. It just feels like a cash grab on the nostalgia train. Not every franchise from 20 years ago needs to be brought back.
Sure, things were left open at the end of Revolutions. It's all just a computer program, and it's easy to reboot things, so to speak. But I'd rather see Reeves continue with John Wick, and get on board the MCU, then return as Neo.
Maybe Wachowski will surprise us with something new and original. She did say many of the themes from the first Matrix are even more relevant today, and I agree. But I'm just not stoked for more Matrix. I wish I was, but I'm not.
We'll see how I feel after we see some footage. Until then, colour me skeptical.
