Sequels, especially horror sequels, and especially especially slasher-movie sequels, are usually the first movie repeated. As much as I love 'em, the Friday the 13th and Halloween parts two through 20 are pretty much just the first movie done again, and again, and again.
And, on the surface, that's what Happy Death Day 2U appears to be too. Take Happy Death Day and repeat it. It is Happy Death Day 2 after all.
But, having watched the trailer a few times, there's more going on here than meets the eye.
For one, it's not just Tree (once again played by the lovely and charismatic Jessica Rothe) stuck in the murderous time loop, but everyone around her. AND, without giving too much away, the killer from the first movie appears to get knocked off this go around, begging the question . . . who's the killer now?
Besides, who doesn't want to see Jessica Rothe skydive in her underwear. Not a question. A statement.
Toss in a bunch of stuff about space-time continuums and multiple realities and this could be a far-out sequel that's as entertaining as its charming predecessor, which was one of the better genre movies of 2017.
We'll find out for sure when Happy Death Day 2U opens on Valentine's Day.
