The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the envy of rival studios everywhere. This well crafted, and plotted, run of quality films IS the world of Marvel Comics realized on screen, and a true legacy to Marvel creator Stan Lee.
The box-office goldmine comes with a price, as before Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr. there was a long line of failed attempts to bring Marvel characters to the big screen.
So, in honour of Stan Lee's passing, I'd like to highlight five Marvel movies I'm sure The Man, and his many fans, wishes they didn't exist. In no particular order . . .
1) Fantastic Four (1994) Schlockmeister Roger Corman got his mitts on the beloved Marvel superhero family back in the early 90s. He spent about zero dollars on the film and, if you can find footage on YouTube, it shows. I haven't seen it, but it screams Ugly to me.
2) Fantastic Four (2015) Maybe Marvel's beloved superhero family just isn't destined for a good movie. This giant turd certainly wasn't the right way to go. It actually makes the 2005 version with Jessica Alba and Chris Evan look like a classic.
3) Captain America (1990) The first attempt to bring Steve Rogers to the big screen wasn't an epic failure, but it certainly wasn't very good. Working with little money, director Albert Pyun tried to make an exciting and rousing adventure, but the final effort is pretty weak. Cap hardly wears the suit and the Red Skull gets plastic surgery about 10 minutes in. Lame.
4) Punisher: War Zone (2008) 1960s Batman style camp meets gritty ultraviolence. Fuck this movie. Hard.
5) Daredevil (2003) I had a soft spot for this Ben Affleck vehicle because it was the first attempt to bring my favourite character to the big screen. Then the brilliant TV series showed up, revealed how to do the character right, and pointed out everything this movie did wrong. Sorry, Daredevil (2003), the bromance is over.
