I loved The X-Files before it was popular. I loved the show for a good five years. Then, like all TV series, it ran out of steam long before it actually ended. And I loved the idea of bringing Mulder and Scully back for a six-episode event to wrap-up loose ends.
So did I love the first episode of the new X-Files, and do I look forward to seeing the next five? Stick with me!
Much like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Creed, the season premiere, AKA My Struggle, relies a lot on your nostalgia for the original material. If you grooved on the formula creator Chris Carter crafted back in the 90s, you'll find a lot to enjoy here.
Very little new ground is broken, although the alien conspiracy takes an interesting turn, reflecting world events from 9-11 to the present. And Carter had to bring Mulder and Scully back together and get The X-Files opened again. Suffice to say, a lot of ground is covered during the first 41 minutes of this season, but the ride is a good one.
OK, fine: it kinda felt like going home again.
As for Mulder and Scully, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson know these characters like the backs of their hands. And they create the depth and weight you'd expect from people who've had a relationship that's spanned more than two decades. It's great to see them doing their thing again. Ditto Mitch Pileggi as Skinner.
It's legitimately great to have The X-Files back, and I look forward to catching the next five episodes in the weeks ahead.

I even like the opening theme music.
ReplyDeleteLikewise. Really glad they didn't change it!
