At least that's what the first trailer for the upcoming adaptation of the hit 80s TV series The Equalizer implies. I'm cool with that.
At first glance, this doesn't look a lot like the Edward Woodward vehicle. Then again, Denzel isn't an older British gentleman. Nor is this the 80s. This is a Hollywood action movie in 2014, and it look like the star and director Antoine Fuqua will deliver.
Check it:
I'm guessing, from the type of carnage on display, Sony is cruising for an R rating. The Equalizer was always a gritty and violent show, so this isn't tonally different. And Denzel's Robert McCall is someone with "possible military training," while Woodward's worked for a covert agency. Yeah, we're on the same page here.
The official line: a former black-ops commando who faked his death for a quiet life in Boston comes out of retirement to rescue a young girl and finds himself face to face with Russian gangsters. From the sounds of it, this is The Equalizer's "origin story."
As an action fan and lifelong Denzel supporter, I'm down with this. You'll find me in a theatre seat when The Equalizer opens Sept. 26.
