Jason and Shawn versus The Collection and The Frankenstein Theory

The Collection Shawn: Talk about GORNOPOLIS! Ha ha . Just when I think I needed it the most. Sure, The Collector , (prequel), isn't even worth the memory of my watch, but don't let that stop you from seeing this. This was put together well. Like the Saw movies , it had satisfying gore. Dug it. Everything looked good, semi real, and just seemed to hit me at the right time. It scored there, then it produced an ending, satisfying my every movie watching need. At the time. Good. Jason: What shocks me most about The Collection is how such a good sequel can be born from what was, ultimately, just an OK first film. The Collection is one of the most bad to the ass horror sequels I've seen in a long, long time. I'm beginning to think that the best horror films are no longer than 80 minutes. This is a tight, exciting and, at times, cringe-inducing flick. I dig that shit. But what's most awesome about Marcus Dunstan 's sequel is the ending. Finally, we g

Jason versus The Last Starfighter

What can I say about The Last Starfighter ? I was 12 when it came out and immediately fell in love with the story of a nobody from a middle-of-nowhere trailer park who ends up saving the universe. What 12-year-old boy wouldn't fall in love with a movie like that? Oh, and the hero has an incredibly hot girlfriend played by Canadian actress Catherine Mary Stewart . First actress crush for this Basement Dweller? Yarp. A video-gaming boy, seemingly doomed to stay at his trailer park home all his life, finds himself recruited as a gunner for an alien defense force. So says the official synopsis. Truth is, The Last Starfighter shows it's age almost as much as this Basementite. It was one of the first movies to use CGI extensively, and the special effects are worse than most video games from the last 30 years. The rest of the flick looks like a 30-year-old TV movie . It's clunky by today's standards and lacking in any real excitement and tension. Yet The Last St

The Collection, The Frankenstein Theory and an interview with Andrew Weiner

Never underestimate the power of social media. Doesn't mean you have to like it, let alone understand it, but don't underestimate it. A chance encounter on Twitter led to tonight's feature interview with Andrew Weiner, director of The Frankenstein Theory , which also happens to be one of two movies on the chopping block tonight. Shawn sat down with Andrew for about 45 minutes, and it's a conversation for the ages, according to the Bad Man himself. However, being a 60-minute radio show/podcast, you only get to hear about 18 minutes of the interview. The Basement Boys will post the talk in its entirety at a later date. Stick with us! As for the movies, first up is the horror sequel The Collection. A man who escaped from the vicious grips of the serial killer known as The Collector is blackmailed into rescuing an innocent girl from the killer's booby-trapped warehouse. The first film, The Collector, was so so. Only time, and Jason and Shawn, will tell if this

Star Trek: The Video Game Shatner vs.Gorn trailer

Need we say more? It's the original Capt. James T. Kirk -- William Shatner -- in a rematch with his arch nemesis the Gorn . Fuck yeah! Playing off the original series episode Arena , this commercial brings back the lizard alien Gorn for one more brawl with Shatner. Naturally, both The Shat and The Gorn are . . . well . . . way past their prime. It's a great ad, and has fun with what is arguably one of the most awful, yet legendary, fights of all time. Enjoy. Star Trek : The Video Game takes place between J.J. Abrams ' Star Trek and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness . It'll be released for PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360, and PC on April 23. We trust Game Time with Greg will be all over this mofo. This trailer says You're Next

Earlier this week we showed you some creepy posters for Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett's home invasion flick You're Next . And now we're going to unleash the trailer upon you. There you go. Shawn thinks it looks stupid. I think he thinks it looks stupid because a house full of people are panicking at being assaulted by three guys in masks. I agree. Who cares if they have crossbows !?! There's like a dozen of you and three of them. Fuck 'em up! But I'm willing to give You're Next a watch because Wingard and Barrett can give a standard plot a spin. Here, one among the family under assault has a talent for fighting back. That shit I want to see! You're Next opens Aug. 23. There will be a slight delay today...

Hey folks, Mike S popping in quickly today.  Due to this thing called "Life", a curve ball has been thrown at the crew.  Nothing serious or unfortunate- just inconvenient and untimely. Because of this invasion of "real life", the show won't be aired Thursday night.  The show will air Friday instead, with the podcast being posted on Saturday.  So tune in Friday for a great show! Until then, we apologize for the inconvenience... and suggest the wait be spent listening to past episodes!

The Conjuring scares up this creepy poster

Yesterday we showed you how asstacular movie posters can get with the crappy one sheet for The Wolverine (the trailer is much, much better BTW). Today, we in The Basement proudly display how a studio can get it right. Now isn't that a thing of beauty? It shows what a studio -- in this case Warner Bros/New Line Cinema -- does when it has faith in its product. The execs know director James Wan has a hit on his hands. Advancing screenings have been through the roof. So why not give the film a glorious poster? Roger ( Ron Livingston ) and Carolyn ( Lili Taylor ) Perron buy a farmhouse to share with their daughters. At first, it just seems like your ordinary fixer-upper. But then strange noises and inexplicable disturbances start. Soon the Perrons realize the place is crammed with spirits, the worst being Bathsheba Sherman, a “godforsaken soul” of a witch hanged on the property. The family turns to famed paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren (Vera Farmiga and

Marcus Dunstan is ready to unleash The Collected

Shawn and I are ready to share our thoughts on The Collection -- the sequel to Marcus Dunstan 's The Collector -- tomorrow night (same Bat time, same Bat channel). The Collector was an OK horror outing, but The Collection is supposed to take things to the next level. Now we've learned that Dunstan has written a third film in the series. And he shared some deets with the folks at Crave Online . Here's what he had to say: "It is Collected right now. The first movie sets up The Collector, the second movie is about The Collector’s collection, and the third movie is about a couple of people he has collected," Dunstans said. He continued, "We already have written a little origin, and the origin -- if we ever are so fortunate as to make that -- really kind of answers everything in about five minutes. So I think that would be fun, to see it. And then you just understand, oh, here are some of the iconic visuals that we’ve anchored around this villain
