The Month of Horror Day 4: Child's Play

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! And tonight he wants to play with you!
"Hi, I'm Chucky, wanna play?" I should just leave it at that! No, I'll say a little bit more, I guess. Child's Play is a very fun horror film, the tone is just right and in a movie like this, the correct tone is a real deal-breaker. The story itself is just so ridiculous that on paper you can only assume that this would be a total disaster but somehow it isn't! A serial killer that uses voodoo to transfer his soul into a kid's toy, a doll, named "Chucky"? What the hell? The doll then terrorizes the family and the young boy it belongs to, murdering folks left and right, and not getting its mouth rinsed out with soap for his incredibly vulgar attitude--hey, this almost sounds like a comedy! Isn't that what happened in 'Ted', you know, minus all the killing? Sure, there are moments of black humour sprinkled throughout but there are also plenty of creepy moments, too, filled with lots of suspense! It helps that the voice of "Chucky", provided by thesp extraordinaire Brad Dourif, is extremely menacing; I love this movie! The sequels really do not stack up either.
