Urban legends are perfect material for a horror flick. Hell, there are three movies out there in the Urban Legend franchise. But I've never heard of the one about Smiley before.
Then again, it's probably just the brainchild of writer Glasgow Phillips and co-writer/director Michael J. Gallagher. But that's cool too. Any excuse for some slasher-killer goodness.
After learning of an urban legend in which a demented serial killer named Smiley can be summoned through the Internet, mentally fragile Ashley (Caitlin Gerard) must decide whether she is losing her mind or becoming Smiley's next victim.
Smiley is a pretty freaky looking dude and Gerard is a pretty hot looking chick. These two elements are a good start. The preview doesn't deviate too much from what one would expect -- teens, killer, murder -- but the film does star veteran cool dude Keith David, so what the fuck!?! We'll check it out.
Smiley hits VOD on Oct. 11 and starts a limited theatrical run at AMC theatres the very next day.
