While not the year we anticipated, what with a global pandemic and all, 2020 did produce some good movies. Sure, most of the flicks scheduled for release last year are still in limbo, but a lot of movies did hit screens during the last 12 months -- most to VOD and streaming services -- and many were exceptional. So here's my Top 5 of 2020, a list I'll stand by and hang by. And we might as well begin with my No. 1 choice... 1) Volition Tony Dean Smith's and Ryan W. Smith's sci-fi time twister came out of nowhere and delivered the goods on all counts. It's exceptionally well written, directed, and acted. The story is a real puzzle box, but not so much that it gets in the way of being highly entertaining. And it was made in my home province of British Columbia, right here in Canada. It's the crazy world we live in, but hockey players are back on the ice battling it out for Lord Stanley's Cup instead of chilling on the golf course. That can only mean one thing for our show -- being preempted for hockey games! Usually, the playoffs are well and truly done by now, but given this is 2020, the first round isn't due to end until around Aug. 23. So far, most games have been 6:30 p.m. starts, which doesn't impact From The Basement on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops. But there will be some that start earlier, which means our broadcast time shifts. Which is the case this week. The Silencing is one of those pleasant films that comes out of left field and surprises you with a right/left combination, completing winning you over as a movie viewer. This Canadian thriller from director Robin Pront and writer Micah Ranum reinvigorates the tired serial-killer genre with an exciting story full of twists and turns that keep you guessing for most of its running time. There were several WTF moments that had me smiling with gruesome glee at what I was watching. Shawn and I have watched hundreds, if not thousands, of movies, many of them horror and thrillers. Rare is the day we're surprised anymore. But this one got me a few times thanks to some clever writing and misdirection. Bravo, guys! The story follows a reformed hunter (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and a small-town sheriff (Annabelle Wallis) who get caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse when they set out to track a killer who might have taken the hunter's daughter five years earlier.
