We in The Basement are saddened to learn veteran genre actor Sid Haig has passed away. He was 80. Haig is best know for Captain Spaulding from House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects and, most recently, 3 From Hell. But he had a long career, appearing in various TV shows like Gunsmoke and The A-Team, and hit movies like Diamonds Are Forever and Jackie Brown. The man had a talent for making almost any character likeable. He could go from charming to sinister in a heartbeat, and was always a commanding presence. Even small supporting roles in film's like Rob Zombie's Halloween are memorable. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but I know those who have, and they consider him a true gentleman. Either you dig on Rob Zombie's grindhouse, white-trash sensibilities or you don't. He can be hit and miss for me. I actually liked what he did with Halloween, both the 2007 version and its sequel, but had a hard time getting behind some of his other work (I'm talking about YOU, Lords of Salem!). Hence I went into 3 From Hell with a little trepidation. I appreciate House of 1000 Corpses for what it is, but got a lot more enjoyment out of The Devil's Rejects. Taking the sadistic villains from one movie, and essentially making them the sadistic "heroes" of another was a ballsy move, and Zombie made it work. Thankfully what worked in The Devil's Rejects still works 14 years later with 3 From Hell. Yes, Otis, Baby, Captain Spaulding and newcomer Winslow Foxworth Coltrane are horrible people, and do horrible things to other people, but I found myself rooting for them by the end. We're a few short days away from Rob Zombie's 3 From Hell hitting theatres, not to mention or one-on-one chat with Otis Firefly himself, Bill Moseley! But how do you see the movie, and where is it playing? Fear not, Fathom Events is screening the flick for three nights -- Sept 16th, 17th, and 18th -- at AMC theatres, with each night offering a special treat for fans. The first screening features an introduction by Zombie himself,  the second has a 30-minute documentary attached to the film, and the third night is a double bill of The Devil's Rejects and 3 From Hell. There will also be poster giveaways at the Sept 16th and 17th screenings. Sadly, 3 From Hell is not playing near our hometown of Kamloops, at least at this point. But our fanbase reaches outside our neck of the woods, and we encourage peeps to go here, right now , and pick up some tickets. It was a good day in The Basement. A very good day indeed. Today I had the geek-filled joy of interviewing genre icon Bill Moseley about his upcoming movie 3 From Hell, which of course is written and directed by some guy named Rob Zombie! Suffice to say, The Dude abides... But yes, it's a great interview with a man who clearly loves horror, playing the character of Ottis, and these movies. We talked about revisiting the world Zombie started with House of 1000 Corpses and continued in The Devil's Rejects, what it's like working with Sheri Moon Zombie and Sid Haig, and a whole lot more. We packed a lot into the 10 minutes I was allowed to speak with Bill, and we made it count.
