Mike S recently caught up with Dwayne Johnson's ode to Die Hard, appropriately titled Skyscraper, and he loved the shit out of it. So compelling was his enthusiasm --which you can hear right here on our latest podcast -- that I decided to give it a watch myself.
Does Skyscraper live up to The S's hype? Is it indeed a Red Bull-infused bit of action goodness? Stick with me!
Although Skyscraper doesn't come close to being the classic Die Hard is, it certainly isn't a stinker either. The movie underperformed at the box office, and didn't win rave reviews. But Shawn and I have established most movie-goers and critics are dumb, so we take such things with a grain of salt.
What we've got here is a decent action flick that provides a few edge-of-your-seat moments thanks to the highrise setting, a group of gun-totting bad guys, and a whole lot of fire. Sure, Skyscraper is derivative of Die Hard, The Towering Inferno and other thrillers, but that's kinda the point. Even the marketing played that up. See:
I enjoyed Skyscraper on the level of it being a big-budget Asylum style rip off of better movies. It's fun on that level. Dwayne Johnson is always a likeable presence, and it was great seeing Neve Campbell back on the big screen.
I'm not gonna check this one out again, so it's a Bad. But it certainly isn't a bad movie by any stretch. Watch and enjoy accordingly.
