Childhood memories can be a fickle thing. What was beloved at the age of 11 is not always so beloved as an adult. Such is the case with the 1983 sci-fi movie Krull.
However, add equal parts beer and rum, and it's amazing what a good time can be had by all!
Krull was the tits when I was a boy. The Glaive was a weapon my friends and I wanted to own. The villainous Beast was the stuff of nightmares. And the lovely Princess Lyssa was the girl of our dreams.
Rewatching Krull in a bit of a stupor certainly eased the pain of derivative storytelling, boundless exposition and weak characters. The worst offender in this regard is wannabe hero Colwyn, played by Ken Marshall, who desperately tried -- and failed -- to channel Errol Flynn. He sucked.
Instead, I was able to focus on what a bad-ass weapon the Glaive is, how scary the Beast is (but what an eloquent speaker) and how damn fine Princess Lyssa -- as embodied by the beautiful Lysette Anthony -- remains to this day. The below pic speaks for itself.
And really, that's all I wanted out of this watch: to be entertained. Is Krull a good movie? Nope. Is it a good movie to watch with a few drinks? Hell yeah! It's a Bad, but still good, if you get my meaning.
