During the three years Shawn and I have been on the air we've watched hundreds of movies. Literally hundreds. And, after awhile, one becomes convinced they've seen it all. Then along comes a movie like Detention to prove us wrong.
As a killer named Cinderhella stalks the student body at the high school
in Grizzly Lake, a group of co-eds band together to survive while
they're all serving detention.
Or so the filmmakers would have you believe. Truth is, I'm not sure what Detention is really about. There is a killer named Cinderhella, and time travel, and Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse, and a bazillion other pop-culture references. In fact, so much of Detention moves at such a fast clip that it's hard to keep up with what's going on.
Fortunately for me, I cracked a few beers and just took it all in. And laughed. A lot. This is a horror/sci-fi/comedy that's best served with a couple of cold ones; otherwise it would send someone with ADD into an epileptic seizure. The visual style, the absurdist plot; it's all designed to be loved or hated. There is no in between.
I loved it! It's fast paced and funny, with some great gore, a hottie or three, and more pop-culture humour than you can shake a stick at. It's hip, but relevant. Irreverent, but meta. And it's got visual flare to spare. Did any of that make sense?
Truth be told, I have no idea who Josh Hutcherson, Spencer Locke, Shanley Caswell or any of the other young cast are. And I don't care. They do good enough work. And Caswell is hot, in a nerdish and very young kind of way. Sue me.
Gotta give this a Good. It's one to share, just to show others that there are original movies being made. Love Detention or hate it, it's a one of a kind.
