Halloween Day by Day: "The Werewolf vs Vampire Women" (1971)

Two of the creatures of the night that seem to be pitted against each other in horror movie are werewolves and vampires.  This was no different back in the 1970's than it is now... Elvira and Genevieve are searching for the grave of a medieval murderess and alleged vampiress when they are stuck in the middle of nowhere.  Fortunately, Count Daninsky lives nearby in a secluded castle.  He offers to help them search for the tomb... but only because within it may lay the key to curing of his curse.  It seems the Count is an immortal werewolf ... " The Werewolf vs Vampire Women " (original title, " La Noche de Walpurgis ") is a Spanish horror film that helped to create a horror movie boom in Spain. The premise is actually one that kinda makes me shake my head.  Not because it's stupid or anything- but rather because such pairings tend to lead to a rather silly movie.  And when one stops and examines this movie, it is...

Marcus Flor Vs. Ginger Snaps

It might be outside of my demographic, but I quite enjoyed 2000's Ginger Snaps. It's an excellent time capsule to its decade, and a solid little horror flick. The thoroughly Emo sisters at the core of this story are the strongest element. Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins) have an interesting dynamic that doesn't feel one sided. The script shows both sides of their struggle as Ginger becomes more wolf like, and how the sisters need one another. These two could have easily been Emo stereotypes, but luckily aren't. What I also really enjoyed is this definitely seems like a 2000s film, bit it doesn't feel dated. It goes to show a focus on characters, and the soul of a script, make a movie last. Far too many 2000s films fail to realize this. All in all, Ginger Snaps was a fun, "edgy" time with a focus on the important things. That makes this one a Good.

Sunday Night at the Movies: Blood Moon

One of the coolest things Shawn and I have experienced doing this show and blog is getting access to movies before they come out. For review purposes, obviously. It's kinda exciting seeing a movie "first." We've had this privilege a lot, and it never gets old. Thank you, movie gods. I was über pumped when a screener for Blood Moon, which I wrote about right here , hit the basementreviews inbox the other day, and figured the cowboys versus werewolves flick was a perfect entry for my Sunday Night at the Movies series.

Cowboys and werewolves, oh my!

Yeah, we're not in the movie-news business anymore, but I think it's a wise idea to make people aware of a flick that looks worth checking out. And the fine folks at Uncork'd Entertainment appear to have the perfect Friday night beer movie on their hands with the upcoming Blood Moon. Hollywood had it's Cowboys and Aliens, us B-movie nerds will take our cowboys versus werewolves, thank you very much!

Werewolf tale The Lycanthropist gets a teaser poster

We've said this before, but Shawn and I feel very fortunate to have met some super cool people during our five years on the Interwebs. Some of them we're even thrilled to include among our circle of friends. Blu de Golyer is one of them. Blu's name probably sounds familiar to regular Basementites. That's because he's the creative mind behind House of Good and Evil and Hillbilly Horror Show. Now the screenwriter has another project on the go -- one that involves werewolves .

Shawn and Underworld: Awakening

Kate Beckinsale . In tight leather . With sharp fangs. Yup. Another installment in the underworld series. This one, man, discovers the truth of Vampires and Lycans , treats it as a disease and attempts to eradicate both. Then set 12 years after the 'cleansing'.  Obviously, that didn't work and we get to see Beckinsale in the tight leathers, kick some ass, both human and lycan. Most of these Underworld movies run quite parallel, in my opinion. Not one standing out as better than the other...could really just be one long-ass movie. That said, these are all a Good to me.  This one included. But this one rides a bit finer line..Vampires, Werewolves and gore.  Leave the lovey dovey stuff to "Twilight" and it's fans... Jason revisits The Company of Wolves

Neil Jordan's 1984 riff on Little Red Riding Hood was the first movie I "discovered." Until then, my life had been all Hollywood all the time. This was the first off-the-radar flick I took a chance on and it cemented my love for obscure, independent movies. If it wasn't for The Company of Wolves, The Basement wouldn't exist. Sold as a horror movie, The Company of Wolves is actually more a symbolic folklore about werewolves, or rather their sexual connotation. Granny tells her granddaughter Rosaleen strange, disturbing tales about innocent maidens falling in love with handsome, heavily eyebrowed strangers. All the stories are somehow reducible to loss of innocence, and fear of/hunger for a newly acquired sexuality. Sounds pretty deep and heavy right? Boring? Not at all. This movie is as fast paced as any fright flick and equally as entertaining. But it's charged with a sexuality that is hard to explain; yet it takes you in at the same time. The Compan...
