Halloween Day by Day: "Them!" (1954)

Horror films often reflect the anxieties and fears that Society feels at various times in history.  After World War II, and the rise of the Soviet Union, fear of nuclear accidents- and the possible side affects found a home in Society's psyche... leading to the "Nuclear Mutated Monster" genre of movies... The discovery of a lone girl in the New Mexico desert leads Sergeant Peterson and Trooper Blackburn to investigate her origins... That search will soon take into the path of something hideous... something monsterous... THEM! The story is pretty simple and straightforward:  Humans tested an A-Bomb, the radiation mutated an ant colony to huge size, mutated ants start attacking humans.  It is enough of a skeleton for a fun little night of entertainment.  There is some depth as it does give insight into the sort of anxieties American people had about atomic bombs, and what the radiation could wind up doing.  When taken in context of 1950's American during ...

The Drunken Review: Humanoids from the Deep (1980)

Humanoids from the Deep, AKA Monster, is one of those notorious movies that circulated amongst my group of friends when I was a kid. Only one of the gang had seen it, but the telling of the tale he gave made this live on in infamy. Monsters come out of the water and seek hot chicks to mate with. And you see boobs! What more does a boy of 10 need to know!?!

Retro Review: Pumpkinhead

It's funny the things that impact us more as we get older. There's a scene in Stan Winston's horror classic Pumpkinhead where Lance Henriksen, who has never been better, holds his dying son in his arms. He begins to tell the boy a story, which he does every day, when the boy utters a weak "Daddy," before passing on. When I was younger, I was like "Yeah, yeah. Bring on the monster and get to the killing."

Get awesomed out by this extended look at Godzilla

If everything you've seen and heard about the new Godzilla movie doesn't make you jones for it in the best possible way, then I weep for you. Actually, I don't, because real men don't weep. But it really is too bad.

The new Godzilla gets a new poster

And me like. Very much. A version of this will hang in The Basement one day. Mark my words, it will. It's probably safe to assume the anticipation level for Gareth Edward's new Godzilla flick is running high. The trailers look awesome, the cast is stellar, and who doesn't want to see the King of the Monsters stomp the tar out of some city and do battle with a host of other creatures? I'd say anyone with half a brain.

Updated: First Godzilla trailer stomps online

UPDATED! We've found another embed of the trailer The Basement brought you a couple of weeks ago. If you missed it, act quick in case it disappears again! If there was ever any doubt that Monsters director Gareth Edwards couldn't deliver the goods with his new Godzilla movie it should be erased with this first teaser trailer from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures . Granted, the movie could still suck, but everything on display here suggests otherwise. From the level of destruction to the corpse of at least one big, bad opponent, this screams everything that I want a Godzilla movie to be. Even the narration is nothing short of pure awesome. But don't take my word for it, go and watch it now! Godzilla 2014-Teaser-VO : Bandes-annonces HD - Click here for more home videos Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, and Ken Watanabe. We in The Basement anxiously awaits the flick's release on May 16. Source...

Jason versus Under the Bed

There's few things cooler than watching a movie made by or starring a past Basement guest. It's the cat's ass really. Last season we interviewed director Steven C. Miller about his brilliant slasher flick Silent Night, and he dropped some deets about an earlier effort, Under the Bed, that had yet to be released. Well, it's out now bitches. And I've seen it! The premise is shit simple: two brothers team up to battle a creature that lives under the bed. Sound corny? Well, the final product sure isn't. It's like an R-rated Amblin Entertainment flick from the 80s, only sombre. Steven does a lot here with very little. The cast is limited, as are the locations. And sadly not enough of Eric Stolze's script is developed for my liking. This is a slow burn that burns a little too slow, in my opinion. Fortunately the final act really delivers the goods. We get gore, scares, a couple of laughs and even some suspense that would make John Carpenter proud. An...

This clip from The Host 2 crushes all in its path

I wasn't the biggest fan of Joon-ho Bong's 2006 Korean monster movie The Host. I also know I'm pretty much in the minority on that front. The monster stuff was cool, but the movie itself just kinda dragged. Not so with this clip from the upcoming sequel, which snuck its way online today. The follow-up is directed by Park Myeong-chan and the footage comes by way of visual FX house Micrograph. There's a break down of some of the effects shots after the clip.  The sequence in question is a monster attacking a group of children. Sucks to be them, I assure you. Have to say, I like what I see. Hopefully the rest of the film will just as bad to the ass. No word yet on a release day, so let's get with the smashing. Kudos to Twitch for the clip!
