The Drunken Review: It Came from the Desert

Giant monster movies were the bomb back in the 50s... largely because of the bomb -- as in nuclear bomb -- and public fear of said bomb. That fear was manifested into giant things like spiders, ants, or iguanas marching out of the desert and eating/smashing anything in their path. *Takes sip of Captain Morgan's rum and Coke Zero* Back in 1989, the video-game company Cinemaware created It Came from the Desert for the Amiga computer (represent!). Said game was inspired by those 1950s horror movies, specifically the giant-ant movie Them!, as the hero in the game is trying to stop an army of mutant ants who came... from the desert!

The Drunken Review: The Possession of Hannah Grace

Exorcism movies are a dime a dozen. But what happens after the exorcism is a relatively original idea? That's where The Possession of Hannah Grace begins, only in this case the exorcism didn't work. All I wanted from this movie was a brisk 90-minute watch and something to numb my brain along with the alcohol I was drinking. Not too much to ask. However, the combined numbing of the drinks and the flick might have been too much for my system, as I remember little about the movie.

The Drunken Review: The Gate (1987)

Thank Jebus for Wikipedia and Google, as my memory of the ending to The Gate is a bit fuzzy. No, it's not entirely because of the alcohol, but last night's beers certainly haven't helped the situation. Now, I'm not saying that reflects poorly on the movie itself, as The Gate is a pretty good horror romp. But I found it -- the ending, that is -- kinda silly the first time around in 1987, and I'm thinking it -- the ending -- still kinda is. Silly that is. Hence it's been struck from the official record of my brain. Killing the beast with a toy rocket? Really? Spoiler alert, by the way.

The Drunken Review: Abominable

Shawn and I reviewed Abominable  back in 2011 , and dug the hell out of it, so why bother revisiting it? Well, I'm associate producer on the upcoming Bigfoot flick No Man's Ridge , and though it might be good to take a look back at Ryan Schifrin's under appreciate little monster movie. And I'd had a few drinks in me at the time, so why not go the full Drunken Review? It'd been eight years. Opinions change... especially after a few cold ones.

The Drunken Review: Hell Fest

How to describe Hell Fest, a Halloween-themed horror flick that harkens back to 80s slasher like Hell Night, Funhouse, The Prowler and countless others? It would be a lot easier if I remembered it well. And no, it wasn't the rum and beer that made me forget much of Hell Fest (well, OK. Maybe a little bit). It's more how generic the flick is, offering little new to the horror subgenera other than its unique setting.

The Drunken Review: Krull

Childhood memories can be a fickle thing. What was beloved at the age of 11 is not always so beloved as an adult. Such is the case with the 1983 sci-fi movie Krull. However, add equal parts beer and rum, and it's amazing what a good time can be had by all!

The Drunken Review: Victor Crowley

What the hell, Jay!?! Another Drunken Review? The heck is a matter with you? You on vacation or something? As a matter of fact, I am. And it's almost over. Now piss off and let me review (ish) Victor Crowley before I pass out, would yah! Not a question. A statement.

The Drunken Review: Humanoids from the Deep (1980)

Humanoids from the Deep, AKA Monster, is one of those notorious movies that circulated amongst my group of friends when I was a kid. Only one of the gang had seen it, but the telling of the tale he gave made this live on in infamy. Monsters come out of the water and seek hot chicks to mate with. And you see boobs! What more does a boy of 10 need to know!?!

The Drunken Review: Shark Lake

The Drunken Review is a Basement feature wherein movies are reviewed under the influence of alcohol. Why? Because some movies are better reviewed with booze, almost like the filmmakers designed them that way. Last night, I tackled the 2015 Dolph Lundgren flick Shark Lake. Because if any movie was designed for The Drunken Review, it's one where Dolph Lundgren punches a shark in the nose . . . in a lake. Does Miller High Life make this a fun and enjoyable ride? Stick with me!
