The Smith Brothers interview and Volition

It's been a wee bit of wait since Friday, but the latest broadcast on the mighty Radio NL 610 AM Kamloops is now a mighty podcast... From The Basement! And we continue to celebrate the release of the Canadian sci-fi film Volition, from Tony Dean Smith and Ryan W. Smith, with even more of our interview with the filmmakers. How much more? About six minutes and change! We get into the crucial casting of leads Adrian Glynn McMorran and Magda Apanowicz, how the Smiths were able to keep track of their twisty and turny plot, and how they hope the movie will find its audience in this pandemic world we live in. It's a damn fine conversation, and one we believe Basement Dwellers will enjoy. Plus we review the flick, and let you know if it's worthy of your VOD dollar. Well, is it? Stick with us! And stay tuned, as we review Netflix's revival of the 80s TV sensation Unsolved Mysteries, and the new possession movie The Assent. Is this quality viewing all around? Push p...

Review: The Assent

We first talked about The Assent earlier this year , and believed the film held promise, especially when it came to its take on demonic possession, a horror subgenre that's been done, well, to death. Then the movie disappeared from our radar, and was sadly forgotten about. Well, colour me surprised when I logged into Netflix the other day and there The Assent was. And, without giving too much away, it does offer a slight twist on what we've seen before. You'll have to watch and report back to see what I mean. I appreciate Teo wasn't afraid to touch on topics like schizophrenia and their connection to possession lore. This added a bit of reality, and grounds the film in a way others haven't been. Well play,...

The Assent trailer promises an extraordinary possession tale

Hey, who doesn't like a good 'ole fashioned demonic-possession movie. Not a question, a statement. And we're all about those kinds of flicks here in The Basement. Much like The Exorcist, director Pearry Reginald Teo's film focuses on a youngster who may be possessed by "no ordinary demon," which makes me wonder what an ordinary demon is in the first place. That fact aside, this looks like it has some slick visuals and jolts aplenty. Not a bad start! Take a look: The Assent stars Robert Kazinsky, Peter Jason, Florence Faivre and Hannah Ward. It hits limited theatres this Friday. Source: VVS Films
