First Man has Bad Times with Goosebumps

It's a big weekend at the box office, with no fewer than four movies competing for your dollar, and Jason and Howie are ready, willing and able to throw down on what to watch as We Came from the Basement returns to the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show. But they aren't just talking movies, as Netflix debuts a limited series based on the classic Shirley Jackson novel The Haunting of Hill House, and Taylor Swift is now liked 25 per cent less by U.S. President Donald Trump.

New Blade Runner 2049 trailer reveals humanity's fate

Man, I had a lot of trouble coming up with a headline for this post. Partly because I'm out of practice, and partly because I didn't know what to say. On the one had, I am really looking forward to seeing what Prisoners and The Arrival director Denis Villeneuve does with this follow up to the sci-fi classic. On the other hand, the whole project is a bit worrying, as Blade Runner didn't really need a sequel.

The Nice Guys trailer is proof Black is back

That's Shane Black to you. The genius screenwriter behind such action classics as Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. And yeah, the director of Iron Man 3. The man is a master of the violent, trashy action/comedy and one liners. I'm aware the trailer hit yesterday and has already trended on Facebook. Tough. We talk about things when we want here in The Basement.

Get a load of the Gangster Squad

Noir-style cop movies aren't all the rage these days, but Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer and stars Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte and Ryan Gosling seem poised to change all that with their upcoming flick Gangster Squad. Sure, the title is a little silly, but the preview below looks anything but. This tale of a rogue band of cops taking down an L.A. gangster during the dirty 30s looks as badass as the production design is beautiful. Did I mention Emma Stone's in this? She is. This is a great cast and, if there's one thing Hollywood is good at, it's putting on a spectacle. Gangster Squad is due out some time this year, and it's a film I am going to keep on my radar. In the meantime, give this trailer a peep and sound of if you are so inclined. PS: excuse the Revlon ad at the beginning. Just click on as soon as you are allowed. It came with the trailer. Promise! PPS: I gotta dust off my fedora and trenchcoat :)

Micro Review: Drive (2011)

Some have called Nicolas Winding Refn's action film pretentious, others have claimed it brilliant. I say it's a little bit of both. And it's 100 per cent badass. Ryan Gosling personifies cool as Driver, a mysterious loner who falls in love with the wife of a convict. How that relationship spirals into a blood-soaked crime film is a ton of fun. Drive alternates between noir romance and brutal violence, often flawlessly. And there's one fuck of a brilliant car chase to boot. Not to mention that genius elevator sequence. Refn's film isn't for everyone, but if you dig different this is the film for you. The cast plays to perfection, and moody has never looked so good. Plus who can argue with a film that stars hotties Christina Hendricks and Carey Mulligan? Late to the party for sure, but Drive rates a Good from me.

Trailer Alert: Drive

It's late, I'm drunk, but Basement contributor Matt Bellamy posted this wickedly awesome red band trailer for Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn's upcoming action thriller that took Cannes by storm. Suffice to say it looks awesome. And it makes Canadian actor Ryan Gosling look like a total badass. Throw in Ron Perlman, Carey Mulligan, Christina Hendricks and Albert Brooks and you've got a cast to die for. The story? A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong. Based on the premise and footage below, I'm sold! Bring it!  No word yet on a release date.
