Marcus Flor vs. Color Out of Space

Well, after watching many H.P. Lovecraft movies, I can say with certainty that Color Out of Space is the best one. It comes close to capturing the tone and atmosphere you'd get from reading H.P.'s best. Its slow build up of tension, the body-warping phenomena, and the late-stage insanity are all done very well. It's close to being the ideal adaptation, but a few things hold it back. The most obvious one would be our good 'ole boy, Nic Cage. He didn't go fully insane here, or commit to his character either. He seemed like he couldn't make up his mind on taking this role seriously or not. You could chalk his behaviour up to the effects of "the color," but it just seemed like an inconsistent performance to me. The second thing would be the meandering plot. I know the story is supposed to follow the day-to-day lives of this family, but the series of events didn't feel organic. What I mean is that it sometimes felt like things were happening onl...

Richard Stanley tackles body horror with Replace

Writer/director Richard Stanley might not be a household name, but genre buffs know him well. He exploded onto the scene in the 90s with gems like Hardware and Dust Devil, and has recently earned mad praise with the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Color Out of Space. Turns out Stanley also wrote a body-horror movie called Replace with Norbert Keil, who directs. And it stars genre icon Barbara Crampton. The plot is something David Cronenberg might had tackled in his heyday, with a woman having to murder people and steal their skin in order to fight a dermatological disease. Take a look: You know what, I like what I see! This looks well made and acted, and appropriately gruesome given the subject matter. And I've always dug Stanley's ideas and sensibilities. Replace also stars Rebecca Forsythe and Lucie Aron, and it hits DVD and VOD Oct. 1. Source: Uncork'd Entertainment

New DVD artwork and stills for Apocalypse Kiss

We pimped some details just yesterday about Christian Grillo's sci/fi serial killer flick Apocalypse Kiss, and now we've got some groovy stills and DVD artwork to share. Grillo's movie, which hits the home market April 8, has been called Blade Runner meets Sin City . During our interview with him, which you will hear March 21, he referenced Richard Stanley 's Hardware , which is another gooder. We have high hopes for this one.
