Supernatural Nazi horror film The House hits North America in March

Anyone who thinks North American filmmakers have cornered the market on horror need to think again. There's a pool of talent making some damn fire horror in Europe, but we don't always get to see it. Case in point is the Norwegian flick The House, which was made in 2016, and is just now hitting our shores thanks to the folks at Artsploitation Films.

The Wave rolls into North American audiences

Aside from having the best first name ever, Roar Uthaug has proven himself to be a hell of a genre director. The Norwegian filmmaker made Cold Prey and co-wrote its sequel, Cold Prey 2. Cold Prey is a decent, if not pedestrian, slasher with visual style to spare. Cold Prey 2 is hands down one of the best horror sequels ever made. It was directed by Mats Stenberg.

The Month of Horror Day 2: Cold Prey

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Today Bellamy travels to Norway for a little slasher movie goodness. Have you ever seen a Norwegian slasher flick? Me either! Well, not until Cold Prey came along and I gotta hand it to them, they did a pretty darn good job! It's your typical slasher set up: group o f good looking friends embark on a weekend getaway, this time to a beautiful and picturesque snowy mountain lodge, only to find that there is some crazy madman hiding out who is hellbent on murder -- I hate when that happens. Where Cold Prey differs from the norm is that first off, this is one very nice looking movie. The snowy and mountainous locales are very striking, the lodge and the surrounding area are almost characters themselves. Speaking of characters, the...

Jason reviews Cold Prey 3

First thought that pops into my head having watched this Norwegian slasher trilogy is how incredibly different each entry is. For that reason alone, this is a series of horror movies that truly stands out from the rest. Cold Prey 3, also known as Cold Prey: The Beginning, takes place in the 80's where a group of teenagers go to visit an abandoned hotel, only to find themselves hunted by a psychotic killer through the Norwegian woods. The best thing about Cold Prey 3 is how it fleshes out everything that was eluded to in Cold Prey and Cold Prey 2. This is a prequel in every sense of the word, and one of the better ones to boot. I don't know why more horror films don't backtrack and explore their mythology instead of bringing the killer back to life and killing him again . . . and again . . . and again. Character development is the weakest link in this outing. Instead, we get a prolonged and exciting chase through the woods. I'm not complaining either. This film...

Jason reviews Cold Prey 2

If Cold Prey was a passable time killer than Cold Prey 2 is everything that movie needed to be and more. This is how you make a sequel -- bigger, better and bloodier! Jannicke wakes up in a hospital and all of her friends are dead. As she walks through the dark corridors, she thinks she is left alone. But the nightmare isn't over yet. That synopsis is a bit misleading, but you get the point. If Cold Prey is Norway's answer to Halloween than Cold Prey 2 is that country's Halloween 2 (Rick Rosenthal version). Only this movie is way better than our North American slasher classic. The best part about Cold Prey was the character development and that element is at play here. But the filmmakers bothered to create suspense, scares and some really groovy kills too. Way more people die in Cold Prey 2 and every kill is well staged; my favourite being the slaughter of three police officers toward the film's conclusion. We're not talking Laid to Rest-level deaths, but ...

Jason reviews Cold Prey

This is a movie I took in long before The Basement became a reality. I don't remember being overly impressed, yet Cold Prey has never really left my mind. That can only mean it's time for a re-watch. But how does the film stack up? Jannicke, Morten Tobias, Eirik, Mikael and Ingunn are on a snowboarding vacation in Jotunheimen. They are forced to take shelter in an abandoned hotel when Morten Tobias breaks his leg and their car is too far away for them to reach within nightfall. They quickly discover that the hotel was closed in the seventies due to the disappearance of the managers' son. Unknown to them, someone is still living in the hotel, and getting home, or even surviving the stay, isn't as easy as they believe Wow. That's quite the plot description for something that's supposed to be just a slasher movie. But this Norwegian effort isn't your typical North American horror movie. Sure all the trappings are here, but it's just . . . differ...
