Leave it to Roger Corman to come up with a low-budget answer to Star Wars. And to have the stones to base it on classics like The Magnificent Seven and The Seven Samurai. Battle Beyond the Stars is important for a few reasons. It was written by John Sayles, who went on to write such high-profile flicks like Eight Men Out, Passion Fish, and the TV series The Alienist. Oscar winning composer James Horner (Braveheart, Aliens, Avatar and many, many more) got his start here as well.

I never got to check out any of the 72 episodes that made up the hit syndicated show Monsters during its original run from 1988 to 1991. Nor have I caught the reruns on Syfy or Chiller , or our Space network for that matter. But Basementites will soon have the chance as the complete series is scheduled for release on DVD via Entertainment One on Feb. 25 with a retail price of about $100. No special features have been announced for the nine-disc set. Monsters was produced by the same company behind the popular Tales from the Darkside TV series , and featured such notable guests as John Saxon , Lili Taylor , Meat Loaf, and Adrienne Barbeau . The DVD box art is by way of Fangoria. Can't say it does much for me.
