Open 24 Hours, Project Power and Widow's Point

It was a lively show this past Saturday morning, and if you didn't get to hear it, now sweat (but you really could've tuned in). We proudly present to you this, the latest podcast From The Basement. Not only do Jason and Shawn review a bunch of new movies to make your viewing selection easier, they also welcome Dusan Magdolen of the Kamloops Film Society to discuss movie watching heading into the fall. What have The Basement Boys watched this week? They take on Open 24 Hours, the latest horror offering from writer/director Padraig Reynolds. Does this update on the slasher genre deliver the gory goods? Is Vanessa Grasse's character really crazy? Or is a mad killer actually on the loose? Stick with us! And stick around as Shawn checks out Netflix's Project Power starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Jason tackles Greg Lamberson's latest, Widow's Point with Craig Sheffer, the Shudder sensation Host, and the horror/Western The Pale Door. As for Dus...

Jason versus Baby Driver

If you're anything like me, and treat every experience behind the wheel as a high-speed chase, you'd best not put your key in the ignition for a good 30 minutes after watching Baby Driver. No, you're not going to want to drive into a cliff or anything. Not if you love good music and cinema. No. You see, not since Speed have I wanted to put the pedal to the metal so badly after seeing a movie.

Shawn versus The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Hello Basementites, Shawn here. I'm a big fan of superheroes. Next life, I'm gonna be one. This life, I love being the villain. Spider-Man is one of my favorite "heroes". In order (not that this means anything but) Superman, Hulk, Spider-Man. The big 3. So here we are, with a rebooted franchise. My HUGE nagging question is: WHY?  I mean, there are no leaps and bounds made in the CGI tech from the last set.  Which started in only 2002 and ended in 2007 Sure, Tobey is old now. But why reboot from the beginning. Just replace him and continue on. I made absolute fun of the last Maguire 3 and call them the Mary Jane movies. With a little Spidey in them. You could take all three of the Tobey Maguire Spidey movies, cut out most to ALL, of the Kirsten Dunst scenes and make one epic Spidey. (minus Venom casting, but we'll get into that later)

Shawn VS White House Down

I'm not sure why, but I watched this movie with resistance. Even though my favorite director, Roland Emmerich , was involved. Maybe because Channing Tatum does not seem like the "action" hero I need to see. Mostly because I'm positive I could kick his ass and he'd still get the chicks. (only because I'm married and would allow it)...but moving on. He's a decent actor, this was a decent cast and Roland Emmerich's hate on for all things American was apparent. I like that. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Maybe because I like seeing congress blow up as much as Emmerich likes to blow it up. haha. Good chemistry, OK characters, pretty decent story. Had a couple of plot poos or awkward bits, but overall I enjoyed the ride.  It was mindless and stuff blowed up.  Yes, "blowed" up. I might have thought that this could be the only movie directed by Roland Emmerich that I could only watch once. But, I'm pretty sure I'll w...

Jason (finally) versus Django Unchained

Coming at a movie long after everyone else on the planet has seen it can be tough. Others' perceptions will impact how a flick, especially one as well received as Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained , plays for the viewer. But a rainy afternoon, an HD projector, a fridge full of beer and a enough chili to feed an army warranted sitting down and giving this almost three-hour western a go.  With the help of a German bounty hunter , a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.  I'll come right out and say it, Django is Tarantino's best flick. It's his most complete work, and best shows off his talent for dialogue, music and violence without compromising what is a loving homage to the spaghetti western . Django is, quite simply, brilliant. How much so? The two-hour-and-45-minute run time blows by. I was never bored, not even for a second. No line of dialogue is out of place, each character is expertly written and per...

New poster, trailer for Die Hard 6 . . . err White House Down

Sorry, could resist. But there is something about Roland Emmerich 's potential summer blockbuster that feels like a Die Hard movie. Terrorists? Check. Terrorists taking over a building? Check, in this case the White House . Self-mocking hero running around in a wife beater? Check. Yup. Die Hard. Still, this new preview for White House Down does present a flick that could be a lot of big, dumb fun, which is all summer movies should be. The poster works too, with Jamie Foxx doing his best Barrack Obama impression. Judge for yourself. We'll see if Magic Mike , AKA Channing Tatum , can pull of a John McClane of his own when White House Down opens June 28. Second Django Unchained trailer will blow your socks off

I bet most of you almost forgot Quentin Tarantino's western Django Unchained was coming out on Christmas Day. It's been months since we saw a preview or image, which is a lifetime in Hollywood terms. Well, we've scored a second trailer for Django (the D is silent by the way), and it looks bad to the ass! More story, more violence, more comedy, and more Jonah Hill as a KKK member. Sounds like fun in my book. With the help of his mentor (Christoph Waltz), a slave-turned-bounty hunter (Jamie Foxx) sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner played by Leonardo DiCaprio. What more do you need to know? Get on this motherfucker! Looking forward to this one! Now peep the preview and have yourselves a great night!

Some pics from Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained

It's hard not to get excited when a new Tarantino movie comes along. As a writer and director, he just gets better with age. As good as Pulp Fiction is, and it's great, I still loved the shit out of the Kill Bill movies and Inglourious Basterds. Basterds is my hands down favourite of his. Knowing a new Tarantino movie is coming just in time for Christmas has me excited. And the fact that he's making a spaghetti western has me downright giddy. Throw in a cast that includes Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Don Fucking Johnson and I'm sold. This is one of five films I will endure a theatre for this year. The teaser for Django Unchained will appear before Prometheus on June 8, but we've got a few pics below to satiate you with until then. The film follows Django (Foxx), a freed slave who treks across America with Dr. King Schultz (Waltz), a German dentist turned bounty hunter. Together, they try to retrieve Django's wife Broomhilda from ...
