Basement Classics: Silent Night and Reboot

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a couple of aging movie geeks named Jason and Shawn reviewed movies on a weekly basis on 92.5 FM CFBX Kamloops. One such week, just before Christmas of 2012, and right before the Mayan apocalypse, they sat down to review Steven C. Miller's slasher flick Silent Night, a cyber-based short film called Reboot, and interview the director of the indie horror Rites of Spring. And it was good.

Basement fave Silent Night headed to theatres

Last year at about this time Shawn and I were introduced to the work of director Steven C. Miller . And what an introduction it was! Silent Night, Steven's loose remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night , is a lean, mean slasher machine that did what all good remakes should -- it took the idea of a killer Santa Claus and ran with it. And boy did it run far. Silent Night will get regular seasonal play alongside the classic Black Christmas . We didn't catch Silent Night in theatres during its original run. However, lucky Basementites south of the border -- that means you, U.S.A. -- get another chance as the flick begins screening in theatres on Dec. 18. Exact theatres and dates are still being sorted out, but Sacramento, Buffalo and New Orleans are on the list. For the uninitiated, the police force of a remote Midwestern town search for a killer Santa Claus who is picking off citizens on Christmas Eve. It's up to Jaime King and Malcolm McDowell to stop him. If yo...

Jason and Shawn review Silent Night and Reboot

Silent Night Jason: Stephen C. Miller's seasonal slasher movie has everything I could have hoped for. Dismemberment, death by wood chipper, boobies, a bad attitude and a flamethrower murder or three. And it's sleazy as fuck. I dug the shit out of it! It also highlights a very real, and often overlooked, cynical view of the holiday. Christmas isn't all roses and good cheer. There are a lot of people out there, like myself, who hate this holiday. And there are more than one or two who tend to go a little mad some times. Enough philosophy. Jaime King is as good as ever in this. This woman sticks by her genre movies and she owned it here. But kudos as well to our Bad Santa. He said but two words, yet turned in a great performance as an iconic horror bad guy. This dude was bad to the ass, and creepy to boot. I dug him a lot. If I see him climbing down my chimney, I'm grabbing the family and running out the back. I'm adding Silent Night to my seasonal wat...

Silent Night, Reboot and an interview with Padraig Reynolds

Christmas comes a couple of weeks early to The Basement this year as Jason and Shawn engage in some seasonal "cheer" with one of the two films on the chopping block tonight. Let's just say this is a Christmas tale right up The Basement's alley. But first, the Basement Boys sit down with Rites of Spring writer/director Padraig Reynolds for a one-on-one chat about his hit independent horror film and the not one, but two, sequels in the works. It's an interesting and insightful chat that traces the roots of horror back to the 1970s and 1980s, and is a must hear for any movie and fright film fan. As for that Christmas movie, the Basement Dwellers take on Steven C. Miller's slasher flick Silent Night. Genre faves Jaime King and Malcolm McDowell star as cops on the trail of a killer Santa Claus. Miller's movie is said to be a loose remake of the notorious Silent Night, Deadly Night from the 80s. Is this version naughty or nice? Stick with us! Then get re...

This Silent Night clip offers body parts and Jaime King

All things considered, that's not a bad combination if you're a horror fan. We dig our gore and our hotties, and this clip covers 'em both. Awesome! King plays a cop out to stop a murderous Santa Claus who is picking off residents in a small town on Christmas Eve. In this scene, she tracks a ringing cell phone to a gruesome crime scene. Directed by Steven C. Miller, Silent Night also stars Malcolm McDowell, Brendan Fehr, Ellen Wong and Donal Logue. The flick hits theatres Nov. 30 and DVD/Blu-Ray on Dec. 4. Thanks to the folks at Arrow in the Head for this clip.

Santa Claus has a bad attitude in this Silent Night trailer

It's been months since we've told you anything about the upcoming Christmas-themed horror flick Silent Night, which is rumoured to be a remake of sorts of the 1980s non-classic Silent Night, Deadly Night. Ish. Having watched the trailer below, I can safely say I'll give this a look, hopefully in time for a review on the show pre-Christmas break. It's got murders, hot chicks, Santa Claus with a flamethrower, Malcolm McDowell AND genre hottie Jaimie King. What's not to like? The plot, if you please: the police force of a remote Midwestern town search for a killer Santa Claus who is picking off citizens on Christmas Eve. King and McDowell are said police force. Ellen Wong, Brendan Fehr, and Donal Logue also star. Anchor Bay has picked up Steven C. Miller's film, which is due to hit theatres on Nov. 30.

Santa kills again in Silent Night

Because nothing -- and I mean nothing -- is safe from the remake train, that notorious 80s slasher flick Silent Night, Deadly Night is getting a once over care of Anchor Bay. Bloody Disgusting let it drop that the film is a loose remake of the 1984 original about a boy whose parents are murdered by a guy in a Santa suit on Christmas Eve. Surprise, surprise: he grows up to commit his own holiday themed murders. I can honestly say I've never seen it, so no comment on the film's quality. Will have to rectify that. The redo stars scream queen and My Blood Valentine 3D star Jaime King and veteran character actor Malcom McDowell, who is no stranger to horror remakes after headlining Rob Zombie's Halloween. Also on board on Donal Logue, Jamie Kennedy, Brendan Fehr, Lisa Marie and Ellen Wong. King plays a small-town sheriff who battles the Santa Claus killer. Silent Night begins shooting next week in Winnipeg.
