Halloween Day by Day: "The Raven" (2012)

One of the icons of the horror literature genre is none other that Edgar Allan Poe.  Pretty much every short story he's written has been adapted onto the big and small screens. Edgar Allan Poe's death was very much like his stories- mysterious, creepy... and unsolved.  So, it was only a matter of time before the "story" behind the events leading up to his death was turned into a film... A series of murders based upon Poe's short stories lead the police to investigate him as a suspect.  To clear his name, Poe must embark on a game of literary cat and mouse- and journey to the dark corners of his mind to find the real killer... at any price... The concept behind this movie is certainly interesting- especially for Poe fans and experts.  It moves at a fairly good clip, with some decent twists and turns to keep the viewer interested. The characters aren't too bad either- with Poe being the best of the lot of course.  There isn't much in the way of d...

Fundraising begins for slasher flick Hunter

On Oct. 14 Jason and Shawn will broadcast their feature interview with up-and-coming filmmaker Ryan Shovey, who has just embarked on the awesome endeavor of raising money to get his first film off the ground. And Ryan isn't making no two-actor-sitting-in-one-room-talky-boring drama. No, this boy loves horror, and he's going the route of James Wan, Wes Craven and John Carpenter before him . . . he's making a slasher movie. A slasher movie called Hunter. In order to secure funding, Ryan and co-screenwriter Ross Algana want to make a short film to show investors what they can do with little money and a lot of ambition. Ryan's made a number of short films, including an award-winning version of Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart, so he knows what he's doing. The hope is the short will generate buzz and get the production off the ground in much the same way as shorts for Saw, District 9 and Napoleon Dynamite did. Jason had a great talk with Ryan, and this is ...

Paranormal Activity director to tackle Edgar Allan Poe, but not literally

Area 51, Oren Peli's follow up to Paranormal Activity, hasn't yet hit theatres but the writer/director is already lining up his next project. He's signed on to direct the thriller Eliza Graves, based on a short story by horror master Edgar Allan Poe. An adaptation has been in the works for years with the likes of Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger and Natalie Portman attached as stars. The project is produced by Mel Gibson. Yes, that Mel Gibson. The plot follows a Harvard grad who travels to Maine for a residency at a mental institution. It's not long before he discovers the patients have actually taken over as staff. It's bad scoobies from there on in. I highly doubt Peli will fall back on any of his found footage tricks for this one, as the story takes place pre-video surveillance. And it will be nice to see if he can generate scares without relying on modern technology.
