On April 7, 1934, a rock slide triggered a tsunami that destroyed a Norwegian village, killing 40 people. Believe it. And two other similar Norwegian tragedies have claimed the lives of more than 100 others. Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (Cold Prey) has used these disasters as the basis for his latest flick, The Wave, a small-budget disaster picture that gives large-scale Hollywood blockbusters a serious run for their money. Yeah, I liked it. A lot.

Aside from having the best first name ever, Roar Uthaug has proven himself to be a hell of a genre director. The Norwegian filmmaker made Cold Prey and co-wrote its sequel, Cold Prey 2. Cold Prey is a decent, if not pedestrian, slasher with visual style to spare. Cold Prey 2 is hands down one of the best horror sequels ever made. It was directed by Mats Stenberg.

It's a rare event when my wife tells me I'm not allowed to watch a movie without her, but San Andreas was one of those events. So, when a Blu-ray screener crossed The Basement's path, we had a disaster date night perfectly lined up. Was The Rock's latest up to snuff for this carnage prone couple? Stick with me! First off, San Andreas is no Mad Max: Fury Road or Skyfall. It's not a classic by any stretch of the imagination. But it's a pleasant enough diversion, offering the sort of large scale destruction and spectacle Hollywood excels at. Shit gets smashed good in San Andreas, and it's nice to look at.
