Adrian Glynn McMorran predicts a Parallax for The Old Guard

From The Basement continues its celebration of the acclaimed new sci-fi movie Volition when it returns to the mighty Radio NL 610 AM airwaves this evening. And the irreverent duo of Jason and Shawn do so by welcoming Volition's star, Adrian Glynn McMorran, to The Basement for a discussion about Tony Dean Smith and Ryan W. Smith's hit movie. Adrian is a talented and thoughtful guy, and it comes through during this conversation. The Basement Boys also have a bunch of new movies to put on the chopping block, including the deep, deep, DEEP sci-fi/mystery Parallax, Tom Hanks's World War 2 flick Greyhound, and Netflix's foray into summer blockbusters, The Old Guard. What'd they have to say, and what do they think? Tune in at 6:05 tonight via the 610 AM dial...

Review: The Old Guard

God bless Netflix for keeping the summer blockbuster alive amidst a global pandemic. Had COVID-19 not reared its ugly head, we'd have been smack dab in the middle of films like Black Widow, The New Mutants, and Wonder Woman 1984 -- all vying for our attention. Sadly, this is not the case... But we do have The Old Guard, a comic-book inspired film starring Charlize Theron as the leader of a band of immortal soldiers who kick much ass in their quest to alter history for the better. And I'm happy to report the movie kicks much ass as well. The Old Guard is full of well-stage gun and fistfights, and larger-than-life set pieces. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood manages to keep it all grounded with a gritty style that lets us see the action. She also slows things down enough to build actual characters and relationships. Not so much that we become bored, but just enough to invest us in what is going on. And Prince-Bythewood gives everything a somber tone, so this feels more li...

The Old Guard trailer features immortal action

We showed you the poster for Netflix's upcoming action flick The Old Guard earlier this week, and now we present the official trailer, which gives us a whole bunch of Charlize Theron kicking everyone's ass. And there is much rejoicing! Hot women + gunplay = quality entertainment, Observe: A covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on a emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it's up to Andy (Theron) and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. This looks and sounds like a boat load of fun, which is all we ask of our summer entertainment here in The Basement. So we'll be watching when The Old Guard hits Netflix July 10. Source: Netflix

Charlize Theron front and centre in Netflix's The Old Guard

There might be slim pickings for big-summer movies at the box office but don't worry, Netflix has us covered. The streaming giant has The Old Guard -- a big-budget comic-book adaptation starring Charlize Theron -- headed our way July 10. A trailer is scheduled to drop on Thursday, but we've scored a poster for your eye holes today. And here it is: The Old Guard is about a group of immortal mercenaries who keep their identities secret while making the world a better place. Things change when the possibility of exposure, and the revelation of another immortal, threaten to change The Old Guard's world forever. Gina Prince-Bythewood directs. The comic was created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez. Looking forward to seeing some actual footage later this week but trust me, we in The Basement will be watching come July. Source: Netflix

Top Five Movies With Strong Female Lead Characters

So. 2019's "Charlie's Angels" bombed. And a stereotype that men don't see movies with strong female leads is "born." It's a thing, eh? I was originally going to do a standard, "Having My Say" format... but it's been said by pretty much everyone else already: "Males will see a movie with a strong female lead IF the movie looks well made." Which I agree with.  I quite enjoy books, movies, and TV shows with strong female leads... provided the characters, plot, acting, visual style, etc are decently done. So, instead of blah blah blah, I'm going to present you my Top Five Movies With Strong Female Lead Characters! Adventures in Babysitting (1987)-  Starring Elizabeth Shue, this movie chronicles the adventures of  a babysitter as she takes her charges across town to rescue a friend from the bus station. A strong female character who -- while having vulnerabilities faces up to the challenges in front of her,...

Jexi messages Gemini Man for The Addams Family

A trio of decidedly different films hit theatres today; an animated update of a TV classic, a smartphone-themed comedy, and an action flick starring Will Smith. Which one is right for you? That's the question From The Basement hopes to answer when they hit the Radio NL 610 AM Morning News at 8:20 this morning. So yeah, there's an animated version of The Addams Family coming out this weekend. It features the voices of Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz and Oscar Isaac. Could be a good Halloween watch for the kids. In the mood for action? How about Will Smith Vs. Will Smith? Then check out Gemini Man from Academy Award winning director Ang Lee. Yup, an action film from an acclaimed director. Kudos to him! And finally, there's Jexi, which is about a smartphone that becomes obsessed with its user. It's a comedy, by the way. Add the latest entertainment news and a rundown of what's worth watching at home and you've got the latest segment... From The Base...

The Intruder takes a Long Shot at Ugly Dolls

Three new movies hit theatres this weekend, but none of them... NONE OF THEM... have a shot at unseating Avengers: Endgame as champ at the box office. Even if the Marvel mega-picture drops 50 per cent this weekend, it'll still make $160 million during the next three days. So these newcomers don't stand a chance. What are they, and why has Hollywood even bothered to release movies in Endgame's wake? Jason and Howie will tell you all about it on the Radio NL 610 AM Morning Show.

Mike S and his tweets versus Hancock

Remember when Will Smith was somebody? OK, he's still SOMEBODY, but there was a time when he was the biggest movie star on the planet and, if his name was attached to a flick, it pretty much guaranteed box-office success. 2008's Hancock was one of the movies made in heyday of Will Smith's popularity, and before superhero movies became all the rage. It's a dark comedy that plays within the genre while having fun at its expense. And Charlize Theron is in it. 'Nuff said.

Final Mad Max: Fury Road trailer is off the hizzle

"Off the hizzle" is still a hip saying right? Not that we really give a shit about such things, especially when it comes to our opinion of movies etc. and what other people think of them. And we really don't care if YOU don't think this final trailer for George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road is off the hizzle, because we think it is. And that's all that matters.

About that Mad Max: Fury Road trailer

Yeah, I know. We're supposed to be on hiatus until September. Then that Mad Max: Fury Road Comic-Con trailer exploded all over the Internet and I felt compelled to chime in with my worthless two bits on it. I was chillaxin' at a lake when the trailer hit, and pretty much burned through my month's data plan watching it over and over, trying to take in what I was seeing on my iPhone . Even on that small a venue, George Miller's triumphant return to the Wasteland was a thing of beauty.

Some bad ass Mad Max: Fury Road images

We've still got a whole year to wait for George Miller's latest instalment in the Mad Max saga, but the marketing is finally gearing up for the much anticipated Fury Road. I say finally because the movie has been done for a while and us Road Warrior fans wanna see some cool shit, dammit!

Red-band trailer for A Million Ways to Die in the West will freak you out

Why? Because it's fucking funny, that's why. That's right, I swore in the first line of this post. Wanna fight about it? Pussy.

A new look at Tom Hardy as Mad Max

Yes, George Miller's latest installment in his Mad Max franchise is still a couple of years away, but our boys at Arrow in the Head have scored a new look at the new Max. And it can be confirmed that Tom Hardy , who steps in for Mel Gibson , does indeed look like the Road Warrior . This is a good thing. Observe: We don't know much about Mad Max: Fury Road other than it's a continuation of the series, not a reboot or remake. Gibson didn't return because, well, you know. Mad Max: Fury Road also stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Witness the Mad Max: Fury Road vehicles in motion

Not that this is actual action-packed footage from the upcoming Mad Max sequel. It's literally just a minute or so of vehicles driving around with some dramatic music playing. But, until we get a trailer, it's something. Mad Max: Fury Road is co-written and directed by George Miller , and is the fourth film in Miller's Mad Max franchise . No, Mel Gibson will not return as Max. The great Tom Hardy (pictured) has been handed the torch. But Miller has assured fans this is not a reboot or remake. It's a continuation of the story. Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult co-star in Fury Road, which is due out next year. Yes, next year. That's going to be a long-ass wait. Fuckers! Jason reviews Prometheus

Hands down one of the most anticipated films to come down the pike in years, and I'm pleased to say Prometheus doesn't disappoint, at least for the most part. For the record, a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. Once there, they find more than they bargain for and engage in a desperate fight to save the future of the human race.  I'll answer one question right out the gate: yes, this is an Alien prequel. But don't go in expecting everyone's favourite space bug to be the main antagonist (don't worry, they do make a brief appearance, and it's awesome). Prometheus can also be taken as a standalone film, and is satisfying on that count. Other critics have already said it, and I'll say it again here, there is no way Prometheus can meet expectations. It leaves as many questions unanswered as it does answer, and the stage is set for a whole new run of fi...

All about Prometheus . . . the spaceship that is

Because there isn't already enough anticipation for Ridley Scott's return to the sci-fi franchise Alien, we've got this handy little featurette from the new film Prometheus, due out June 8. This two-minute video details the design and construction of the spaceship at the centre of the film, the Prometheus itself. There's interviews with the cast, which includes Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace and Chalize Theron, Scott and the production designer. It's interesting stuff if you're a hardcore movie nerd like me. Prometheus follows a team of explorers who discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Enjoy the video!

First clip from Prometheus lands in The Basement

Alright, dammit! Just open already. I'm tired of posting teasers for trailers, teaser trailers, trailers, pictures and clips for Ridley Scott's (hopefully) triumphant return to sci-fi and the Alien franchise. But I'm not tired of watching shit from Prometheus, I just want to see the movie. It looks boss, and the latest clip -- which does nothing more than show a ship land on a planet -- just makes me want to see it more. June 8, get your ass over here! Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba , Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in the story of a group of space explorers who set out to discover the origins of mankind . What they find shares DNA with Scott's Alien, and then some. Now watch the clip!

Latest Prometheus trailer will rock your universe

We've teased Ridley Scott's return to the Alien franchise a shit load already on the site, but when a new piece of news lands, we gotta push it. Because that's how we roll. Below is the new international trailer for the film, which hits North American theatres on June 8. I don't know what more we can say that hasn't already been said, other than we need to see this. It looks like five kinds of awesome, and this latest trailer just cements that. Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in the story of a group of space explorers who set out to discover the origins of mankind. Now watch this bitch and enjoy!

Because we can, the Prometheus trailer

We're pretty much last to the party when it comes to giving the full preview for Ridley Scott's Prometheus play. But we've pimped the film quite a bit on the site, and it only seems wrong not to, so we are. So there! Scott claims his latest film "shares DNA" with his original sci-fi blockbuster Alien. If you pay close attention to this trailer, the parallels sure look far stronger than what the director is alluding too. And I say good! Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron in the story of a group of space explorers who set out to discover the origins of mankind. Big shit happens instead. This looks awesome, IMO. And it could be a contender for one of the biggest films of the year. We'll know for sure when Prometheus lands in theatres June 8.
