Catching up with... Amityville: The Awakening

Amitville: The Awakening is one of many films that suffered at the hands of the Weinsteins, first from re-shoots and re-edits, then from the scandal. It was supposed to come out in 2012, then finally appeared in 2017 as a limited theatrical release. I caught it with it on Netflix this past weekend. The film's storied history, which is almost as storied as that house in Amityville, is a black mark against an otherwise harmless film; one that is better than of most The Amityville Horror's sequels and remakes. Here we get a good, female-focused horror movie that relies on atmosphere and The Amityville Horror legend for it's suspense and scares. Yup, this movie takes place in a world where Jay Anson's book and the series of films exists. This adds an interesting and fun layer to the movie, especially a sequence where some of the characters watch Stuart Rosenberg's movie in the Amityville house at 3:15 a.m. Novel approach aside, there isn't much going on here...

Jason reviews The Burning

Made during the cash-in period of the early 80s, when everyone wanted another Friday the 13th or Halloween, comes this little-seen slasher film with effect by the great Tom Savini. How does it stack up? Stick with me! A former summer camp caretaker, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong, lurks around an upstate New York summer camp bent on killing the teenagers responsible for his disfigurement. That camp caretaker is Cropsey, a real urban legend in upstate New York who was also the focus of a documentary we reviewed back on Season Two. Granted, the makers of The Burning use the connection loosely. This isn't art, it's a slasher movie. But at least they tried. Take any one of the Friday the 13th films and you've got the plot for The Burning. Hot chicks and horny guys? Check. Midnight swims in the nude? Check. Sex in the woods? Check. Boobies? Check. Bloody murders? Check.  I'm not complaining. This is standard stuff, but the kills are well handled and bloo...

Oh hell no! Halloween being remade again?

So say the folks over at Bloody Disgusting, who revealed today that Platinum Dunes is no longer moving forward on Halloween 3D or the Hellraiser reboot. But sources told the site Harvey and Bob Weinstein, the brothers in charge of Dimension Films, are contemplating another relaunch of the Halloween franchise, which they took over with Halloween 6 and continued through Rob Zombie's recent reboot. All I can say is fuck no. Please fuck no even. Stop. Just stop. We don't need another reboot, especially considering that Zombie did his just five years ago. Love them or hate them, his film's exist. But we don't need a third film or a relaunch. You want to make money off the Halloween name, Weinsteins? How about re-releasing the original films in theatres. One every Halloween would be great. But leave the franchise alone and come up with a new, original idea. Horror fans and movie fans are hungry for one. Make a good movie, and we'll come and watch it. Leave the brand...
