I've never been much a cartoon person but, having a kid, you quickly become one, whether you want to or not. Fortunately, there's a few gems out there that make enjoying cartoons easier.
2014's The Lego Movie is one of the few animated films outside the Pixer line that I quite enjoyed. And I'm happy to say it's sequel, aptly titled The Second Part, more than lives up to the first. In fact, it exceeds it, and does so quite nicely.
Sure, the obligatory Lego humour is there. Visual and verbal gags abound, and there's just as much comedy for the adults to enjoy as the kids. In fact, I'm pretty sure my wife and I laughed more than our son. For the record, there's a great Bruce Willis cameo, that's a perfect nod to Die Hard.
What sets The Lego Movie 2 apart, and has me appreciating it even more than the first, is the core message. Yup, this movie gets a bit preachy, but it's something people -- especially kids -- need to hear.
Everything is not awesome, and that's OK.
Sure, that's contrary to the message of the first flick, and a lot of what is being sold in schools and social work today, but it's true. Everything is not awesome. It can't be. It's impossible. So be OK with it, and by sticking close to the people you love, things can be just fine.
End of pretentious portion of review. If you haven't seen The Lego Movie 2, get off your ass and do it. The movie is doing half as well as the first, and that's a shame, as it's a much better all-around film. A Good for sure.
