Who doesn't like a good sci-fi actioner? I'm willing to bet most people do. So I went into Leigh Whannell's Upgrade hoping for a good time at the movies.
And, given the amount of beer I had on this Friday night, I was also hoping for some mindless, and often bloody, entertainment. With a wink and a nod as well.
Truth is, Upgrade isn't as mindless as I thought it would be. Nor as funny, which I anticipated given the sly preview that appeared earlier this year. Although it does have its funny moments, and isn't lacking in bloody carnage.
But Upgrade has more going on beneath the surface than I thought, and that's not counting the third-act twist. It is a fun romp, but I wish I hadn't gone into Upgrade hoping for a typical Drunken Review, as there are some ideas at play here.
As is, Upgrade is full of some big and smart ideas. It's still a good, and bloody, action romp, only not the one I anticipated.
My advice, check out Upgrade with a full deck and sober mind. I didn't, but I still had a good time. If I had gone into it straight, I believe I would have got a lot more out of it. Regardless, it's a Good, and I look forward to checking it out again in the right mindset.
As is right now, I'm still wondering what happened to my Friday night at the movies, only that's not a bad thing.
