Some movies stand the test of time, some movies don't. Some live up to your memories, some do not.
The Return of the Living Dead is one of those odd ducks that does and doesn't. How so? Stick with me!
For one, it's still got a good sense of humour. It was made at a time when horror was served to audiences with tongue firmly in cheek, a trend that persisted well into the 90s. Fortunately, most of the stuff that was funny back in 1985 is still pretty amusing today.
I especially like how they wanted us to believe the original Night of the Living Dead was based on true events. That's a pretty meta approach, and something that still flies today.
You know what isn't funny? The talking zombies. Yeah, seeing zombies devour a couple of paramedics, then call dispatch for more, was amusing back in the day. Now, it seems a bit . . . well . . . corny . . . as much as it pains me to say it.
Gore? Not as much as I remembered. I thought this was a bloodier movie. Although the "gooey zombie" is still a nice effect, and a practical one at that.
Acting? Over the top. But this is a horror movie, and an 80s one at that. All is forgiven.
Nudity? I remembered Linnea Quigley spends most the running time naked. She still sells it.
Overall, this was an OK rewatch, but didn't live up to my memories. I doubt I will revisit it anytime soon. Unfortunately, it's a Bad for this Basement Dweller.
