The Month of Horror Day 8: Planet Terror

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! For today's edition, Bellamy takes us to the Grindhouse!

Part one of the Grindhouse feature, directed by Robert Rodriguez, is a zombie schlock-fest in the vein of such classics like Return of the Living Dead, or Zombi 2. Absolutely not meant to be taken seriously, this is one corny, low budget, blood soaked, tongue in cheek splatter-fest and that is exactly how it's meant to be viewed! The plot you've seen before; military experimentation gone wrong, a town and its inhabitants become infected, the area is quarantined and those sole survivors band together and fight to stay alive! There are some hilarious performances in Planet Terror as well, courtesy of Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Fergie (yup, that Fergie, playing a dumb, busty blonde of course!), and even a quick cameo by director Quentin Tarantino who suffers a particularly gruesome and sticky demise. This is meant to be enjoyed as a drive-in B-movie and on that level it succeeds spectacularly--make sure you don't miss the fake movie trailers either!
