I'm having a hard time writing this review. It's not that didn't like The Pact -- because I really did. It's important to note that right out the gate. In a way, Nicholas McCarthy's tale is reminiscent of Absentia in that you go in expecting one thing, but end up with something completely different. Yet horror fans will get everything they want out from this movie. It's unsettling, atmospheric and even has a few genuine shorts shitting moments. Leading lady Caity Lotz is just awesome on the eyes and she can act. We even see Casper Van Dien get a knife to the throat (spoiler alert). This is a creepy fucking movie and McCarthy is a talented filmmaker. I think what's thrown me is that I ended up watching something a little different, and that's not what I expected. Originality is so rare in movies these days, even the ones we love to watch in The Basement. This is a Good, hands down. One of our diamonds in the rough!
If you're a 40 + white dude, like myself, you may remember a comic series called " The Adventures of Tintin ". I know I remember them. This series, dating back to 1929, got turned into a animated feature film by Steven Spielberg in 2011. After buying a model of ship called The Unicorn, teenaged journalist Tintin finds himself on adventure that will take him from the high seas, to the low deserts, and from the distant past to the present. With his trusty dog, Snowy, by his side, Tintin uncovers a story connecting two men across the centuries.. . The story is really quite good. It's well crafted, and high paced- with just enough slow moments to build and develop the world and the characters. This is the sort of adventure story you'd find in the old serials of the 1930's and '40's. In fact, it felt like it was the sort of tale that you'd find Indiana Jones undertaking. I found myself swept up, and swept along as our hero swung from one e...
I know you're not saying it's like Absentia in content, but man...I fucking love Absentia.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm with you in general. It's rare when a horror film genuinely surprises, so this sounds like a welcome departure. Even though I have no idea what it's about.
We love Absentia too! No, this isn't the same kind of movie, but it is original like Absentia. A rarity really. Watch and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteObviously you did find it hard writing this review...given you've only written a paragraph that hardly tells us anything..
ReplyDeleteThey're called micro reviews for a reason dude, but thanks for commenting anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe Pact is about a woman whose mother has died and she is tasked with going home to sort her affairs. She stays in her childhood home and this is when eerie things begin to happen - very effectively at this point. The main character enlists the help of a psychic Stevie to help her but this leads to even more supernatural goings on. Without going into too much detail (for fear of the spoiler haters)you find out why the film is called "The Pact" not too subtly either. It's unusual but there are some very well executed scenes - whether that's the writing or the acting (possibly a combination of the two) it's up to you to decide. All in all a very watchable horror flick, though I do get the feeling they could have made more of it had their budget allowed and the "ghost story" does get lost towards the end, very few niggles with this film, well worth a trip out to see.
ReplyDeleteI concede, a pretty good micro review :)
DeleteThis movie is too scary to watch.
ReplyDeleteA damn creepy flick indeed!
