The Month of Horror Day 20: The Bay

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy takes on one of the biggest department store chains in Canada. No, wait . . . that's not right at all. No, not your local department store but something far, far more horrifying... Take 'Contagion', 'Slither', and ' Invasion of the Body Snatchers ', toss into a blender and you have ' The Bay '! Quite possibly the first eco-environmental horror film I've ever seen, the story here is that over the 4th of July weekend in a seaside town on the east coast of the U.S., a parasitic virus begins to spread in the water and the humans who come into contact with it and are infected by it become mutant hosts. Fun fun! Shot in the ever popular "found footage" style, 'Th...

The Month of Horror Day 9: The Faculty

Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and review at least one horror movie a day for the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy reminds us that in high school no one can hear you scream.   Like something out of those Bruce Coville novels from back in the day, ' My Teacher Is An Alien ' or 'My Principal Glows in the Dark', ' The Faculty ' is in that vein albeit a lot more violent! The basi c premise, and it is very basic, is that aliens from another planet begin to inhabit the bodies of the staff at a Texas high school and it's up to an unlikely group of students to stop them and save the world! It really is a teenage version of ' Invasion of the Body Snatchers ' and it's a whole lot of fun. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City, Machete) with next to no over-the-top attitude that he ...

Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The end is near!

11 Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  The 1978 remake.  Scared the living shit out of me. I was four. No explanation could calm me down. I often would think that people were strange, and now, I was given a reason to. The end would come when you are asleep. The aliens would quietly replace you with a doppelganger and then NOTHING would seem as it was for those yet untouched.  This is the end.  I watch this movie about once a year, give it a good, while in the back of my mind it still gives me chills. There are many groups (mostly conspiracy fanatics) that believe this type of thing has already happened. Especially with the "powers that be". I don't. But it is definitely worth the visit. As is the original 1956 version. Stick with the Countdown to Extinction. There isn't much time left.  IN the mean time, watch out for those emotionless alien duplicates!!
